This peach tree was nearly dead in an abandoned corner of the landscape. Peaches like more water and 'cool' feet than is available here in the high mountain desert. I revived this tree by adding deep mulch out past its drip line and planting a non-spreading variety of comfrey all around. Comfrey is one of the most amazing beneficial plants in the garden, it deserves an article, even a book of its own. In addition to herbal and medical properties comfrey is a powerful dynamic accumulator and mulch plant, it brings a variety of nutrients from deep in the ground and accumulates them on the surface in its leaves. The leaves break down quickly into rich black soil.

We planned a thoughtful redesign of this beautiful home while retaining many of the existing features. We wanted this house to feel the immediacy of its environment. So we carried the exterior front entry style into the interiors, too, as a way to bring the beautiful outdoors in. In addition, we added patios to all the bedrooms to make them feel much bigger. Luckily for us, our temperate California climate makes it possible for the patios to be used consistently throughout the year. The original kitchen design did not have exposed beams, but we decided to replicate the motif of the 30" living room beams in the kitchen as well, making it one of our favorite details of the house. To make the kitchen more functional, we added a second island allowing us to separate kitchen tasks. The sink island works as a food prep area, and the bar island is for mail, crafts, and quick snacks. We designed the primary bedroom as a relaxation sanctuary – something we highly recommend to all parents. It features some of our favorite things: a cognac leather reading chair next to a fireplace, Scottish plaid fabrics, a vegetable dye rug, art from our favorite cities, and goofy portraits of the kids. --- Project designed by Courtney Thomas Design in La Cañada. This 1890 rowhouse had been renovated over time, most recently in the 70s. Our clients wanted to renovate every floor. The floors and walls were out of level, and most of the systems were old. We gutted the structure to the studs, leveled and reframed the walls and floors, added insulation and updated the plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Once the structural and systems work was complete, our crew installed a new expanded kitchen, updated all the bathrooms, and updated the basement. Reconfiguring the first floor plan involved taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create one large entertaining space. To bring more natural light and provide sight lines from the front to the back of the rowhouse, we added new windows to the back wall and moved the opening to the other side as a full-light door. Kitchen features include: • Cabinetry that extends to the ceiling to maximize storage • Large island with seating for four • Painting that imitates the pattern of the ceiling we uncovered during the renovation • Buffet cabinetry in the dining room with a built-in wine cooler HDBros

Design ideas for a traditional landscaping in Charlotte.

State-of-the-art appliances were included in the new floor plan: a microwave set in the upper cabinet, wine cooler below, new dishwasher with a panel to match the cabinets, a new stainless steel refrigerator, and a new professional style range and hood. The alcove for the range received the same tile backsplash, but we used a herringbone pattern to accent the feature wall. We also created a niche in the side wall to provide handy storage for spices. The base cabinets contain spice pullout storage. The original wood framing around the alcove was treated to a new coat of white paint to match the cabinets. The new cabinets, a simple shaker style, are very appropriate for the period of time when the house was built. We added crown molding and casings to the windows to complete this period style. We were able to shift the utility cabinet to the left of the refrigerator, and install a 5 pull-out shelf pantry to the right of the wine cooler. The home owners asked for a pull-out trash unit and this was placed to the left of the sink. To the right of the sink is a corner lazy-susan unit to maximize storage. With this in mind, we added 2 small storage units at the ceiling above the sink. Mary Broerman, CCIDC
