The client was recently widowed and had been wanting to remodel her kitchen for a long time. Although the floor plan of the space remained the same, the kitchen received a major makeover in terms of aesthetic and function to fit the style and needs of the client and her small dog in this water front residence. Open shelves in kitchens make everyday kitchen items easy to access. The open shelves to the right of the sink even house a toaster and mixer that you actually want to see, along with cookbooks, glassware, and ceramics. Small hexagonal tile goes up the entire wall for an easy to clean surface. A retro 1950’s kitchen featuring green custom colored cabinets with glass door mounts, under cabinet lighting, pull-out drawers, and Lazy Susans. To contrast with the green we added in red window treatments, a toaster oven, and other small red polka dot accessories. A few final touches we made include a retro fridge, retro oven, retro dishwasher, an apron sink, light quartz countertops, a white subway tile backsplash, and retro tile flooring. Home located in Humboldt Park Chicago. Designed by Chi Renovation & Design who also serve the Chicagoland area and it's surrounding suburbs, with an emphasis on the North Side and North Shore. This beautiful and tranquil kitchen was enlarged without adding square footage to the room. By relocating the kitchen table closer to the wall and adding a banquette for seating, we were able to gain 18" of cabinet space which allowed for the wall oven and rotation of the island with seating for 3. The island also contains a wine cooler and extra storage for things every cook needs. Double paneled doors on the cabinets with seeded glass inserts break up the row of cabinets without loosing the symmetrical balance of the design. Drawer space abounds and each cabinet is outfitted with custom interior accessories. A pull out pantry located next to the Sub Zero refrigerator keeps everyday food at the cooks fingertips. A custom wood hood with a large ventilation system tops a 36" professional style range. We used the same fabric on the window treatment over the sink as on the chair cushions. This colors add a splash of brightness to the neutral colors of the cabinets and counter ops. Peter Rymwid

1980's Kitchen Renovation: This was a complete renovation. The formal dining room was eliminated, allowing for a larger kitchen, a walk-in pantry, and hearth area...resulting in a more functional use of space for this growing family. Viking appliances, (previously electric, converted to gas), granite, and custom, tea-stained, distressed cabinets configured to add a "Lazy Susan", a wine rack, deep drawers, a spice drawer, and a book shelf end. Hardwoods from hearth area was integrated into the kitchen for a smooth transitional space.Photo 1: Custom, distressed, tea-stained cabinets are not only functional, but beautiful!
