This outdated bathroom had a large garden tub that took up to much space and a very small shower and walk in closet. Not ideal for the primary bath. We removed the tub surround and added a new free standing tub that was better proportioned for the space. The entrance to the bathroom was moved to the other side of the room which allowed for the closet to enlarge and the shower to double in size. A fresh blue pallet was used with pattern and texture in mind. Large scale 24" x 48" tile was used in the shower to give it a slab like appearance. The marble and glass pebbles add a touch of sparkle to the shower floor and accent stripe. A marble herringbone was used as the vanity backsplash for interest. Storage was the goal in this bath. We achieved it by increasing the main vanity in length and adding a pantry with pull outs. The make up vanity has a cabinet that pulls out and stores all the tools for hair care.
A custom closet was added with shoe and handbag storage, a built in ironing board and plenty of hanging space. LVP was placed throughout the space to tie the closet and primary bedroom together.

Today we are featuring another D77 Project by Tim and Camet Runkel at Beautiful Brush Works! I am always excited to share with you about the endless possibilities of Design 7 Seven Acrylic Glaze.
Wow, another beautiful performance from Design 7 Seven Glaze! This 2 tone metallic finish was achieved using a small portion of D77 in my metallics, only about 20% and a splash of water and then worked lightly with tools to erase work lines. Used the D77 in both the Silver base layer and in the golden bronze top layer, and. Voila ! it looks sprayed. The D77 absolutely made this possible, because it gave me the ability to soften the metallic work lines and work from one section into another and then gel out to a flawless finish! I've never used anything like it. I love being able to use products to glaze with that normally dry so quickly that they are difficult to glaze with. Such as Metallics, acrylic stains, acrylic polyurethanes lime products, and many art acrylics. And D77 is phenomenal in metallics! You don’t have to dilute the metallic with glaze so much that it requires many layers to achieve the metallic luster. I even use a small amount in my clear acrylic top coats to have time to work the product over the surface, and increase the dry time a small amount to allow it to level to a rich, smooth, even, finish.
Thank You so much for this wonder Glaze!!
Tim & Camet Runkel,

Every unforgettable living room design begins with a fabulous paint color. The right color scheme can set the tone for any space, embodying whichever mood or style you wish, whether it be elegantly traditional or edgy and modern. As you stand in front of that daunting display filled with hundreds of tiny paint swatches, each color more perfect than the next, you may be asking yourself how to choose just one shade. Selecting living room color schemes can be an easy and enjoyable process if you have fabulous inspiration and the right design tools.
A beautiful color palette will instantly transform any drab and outdated living room into a trendy contemporary den found on the pages of your favorite designer magazines. The right shade can set the tone for the entire space, embodying whichever décor concept you desire. For this reason, when searching those isles for the perfect color scheme it is very important to choose wisely, understanding the particular look and style that each hue will evoke. Every great design will begin with fabulous inspiration.. Imagine your room in a rainbow of outstanding new hues, and then select the color that best reflects your home’s personality and individual décor style.
The importance to color is repeat, Don’t use too much of the same color in large amounts and always repeat a small touch of that color in your open concept.
For This young couple we went with a neutral pallet as they desired pops of colors with their furnishings, The wall paint color acted as a canvas, and the furniture, painting and accessories as there focal point.

Choosing to abandon uniformity in your kitchen can be a great choice if you're looking to opt out of a monochrome aesthetic. Two-toned kitchen cabinets add visual interest and contrast while drawing focus to different features within the space. Designs utilizing two-toned cabinets have become very popular in recent years and it's not a trend that will be fading out any time soon.
Our clients opted for a combination of Earl Grey and Macchiato Classic cabinetry in their two-toned kitchen. The large island with its second faucet, sink, microwave drawer and lower storage is the focal point of the room and a great work surface for food prep and entertaining. A vertical pull out PowerDock was installed into the top of the island for plugging in kitchen tools, phones and laptops. Dolomite Marble subway tile and Brunello quartz countertops brighten up the kitchen and balance out the tone of the cabinets creating a light and airy feel. The addition of contrasting touches such as the Honey Bronze, Flat Black hardware and Champaign Bronze faucets, accessories the room beautifully. The subdued and sophisticated style of this two-toned kitchen is exquisite and shows the various ways that two-tone cabinets can be versatile and appealing.
Some of the other areas that were remodeled in this home included the complete overhaul of the existing stair well, a guest bath and laundry area.
The guest bath has beautiful vanity cabinets in Celest finish, Monochrome Lotus Deco tile and very reflective Midnight Dots in the shower floor and niche. The combination of all three give a striking white, blue and black design that will inspire and show that you can use pattern and texture in small spaces. A twenty four inch wall mounted shower seat can be lifted and secured when in use and tucked away to allow access out of the shower. A pocket door from the guest bathroom provides a second access point to the hallway with the laundry that has also been revamped with the same style and finish of cabinetry.

We don't just remove trees, we like to shape them up as well! We trimmed these two trees, getting them away from the power lines and making the property look just a little better more well-kempt.

Marc and Mandy Maister were clients and fans of Cantoni before they purchased this harbor home on Balboa Island. The South African natives originally met designer Sarah Buehlman and Cantoni’s Founder and CEO Michael Wilkov at a storewide sale, and quickly established a relationship as they bought furnishings for their primary residence in Newport Beach.
So, when the couple decided to invest in this gorgeous second home, in one of the ritziest enclaves in North America, they sought Sarah’s help in transforming the outdated 1960’s residence into a modern marvel. “It’s now the ultimate beach house,” says Sarah, “and finished in Cantoni from top to bottom—including new custom cabinetry installed throughout.”
But let’s back up. This project began when Mandy contacted Sarah in the midst of the remodel process (in December 2010), asking if she could come take a look and help with the overall design.
“The plans were being drawn up with an architect, and they opted not to move anything major. Instead, they updated everything—as in the small carpeted staircase that became a gorgeous glass and metal sculpture,” Sarah explains. She took photographs and measurements, and then set to work creating the scaled renderings. “Marc and Mandy were drawn to the One and Only Collection. It features a high-gloss brown and white color scheme which served as inspiration for the project,” says Sarah.
Primary pieces in the expansive living area include the Mondrian leather sectional, the Involution sculpture, and a pair of Vladimir Kagan Corkscrew swivel chairs. The Maisters needed a place to house all their electronics but didn’t want a typical entertainment center. The One and Only buffet was actually modified by our skilled shop technicians, in our distribution center, so it could accommodate all the couple’s media equipment. “These artisans are another one of our hidden strengths—in addition to the design tools, inventory and extensive resources we have to get a job done,” adds Sarah. Marc and Mandy also fell in love with the exotic Makassar ebony wood in the Ritz Collection, which Sarah combined in the master bedroom with the Ravenna double chaise to provide an extra place to sit and enjoy the beautiful harbor views.
Beyond new furnishings, the Maisters also decided to completely redo their kitchen. And though Marc and Mandy did not have a chance to actually see our kitchen displays, having worked with Sarah over the years, they had immense trust in our commitment to craftsmanship and quality. In fact, they opted for new cabinetry in four bathrooms as well as the laundry room based on our 3D renderings and lacquer samples alone—without ever opening a drawer. “Their trust in my expertise and Cantoni’s reputation were a major deciding factor,” says Sarah.
This plush second home, complete with a private boat dock right out back, counts as one of Sarah’s proudest accomplishments. “These long-time clients are great. They love Cantoni and appreciate high quality Italian furnishings in particular. The home is so gorgeous that once you are inside and open the Nano doors, you simply don’t want to leave.” The job took almost two years to complete, but everyone seems quite happy with the results, proving that large or small—and in cases necessitating a quick turnaround or execution of a long-term vision—Cantoni has the resources to come through for all clients.

The Taft School faculty home serves as a high performance residence and learning lab for students. The project also earned certification through ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS, Water Sense, PHIUS, and Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Homes with Living Building Challenge Petal recognition pending. The project team was honored with third place in the 2014 Connecticut Zero Energy Home Challenge. Excluding the photovoltaic installation the HERS index was 33, and with the 13.1 kW the HERS index is -14. A year of utility bills show the home is producing more electricity than it uses.
Located on a quiet street adjacent to campus the existing, historic home was deconstructed and materials donated or reused where possible. Challenged to find high efficiency windows that were historic commission acceptable, the team installed Klearwall awnings or casements over fixed glass (to mimic double hungs) with simulated divided lites (u-values as low as 0.13). A high solar heat gain coefficient (0.58) facilitates the passive solar gain for winter months, while well designed overhangs and a pergola shade summer sun. Double stud walls have 2¼” closed cell foam plus 8½” dense pack cellulose for a R-49 cavity. The exterior sheathing is R-6.6 Zip Wall System with taped seams to create the continuous air barrier. Inside the solid concrete foundation is 3” closed cell foam behind 2x4 stud walls and R-32 cellulose in the cavity. Prefabricated TJI joists frame the attic floor, an insulated “room” houses the heat recovery ventilator and ductwork, and blown in cellulose blankets it all in R-86. The house tested 0.6ACH50 proving the effectiveness of its air-tight envelope and attention to air sealing.
Heating and cooling is provided by efficient air source heat pumps (9.2 HSPF, 16.5 SEER) and delivered by short duct runs which tested extremely tight. A heat pump water heater provides domestic hot water and an on-demand switch, with an occupancy sensor at each bath, ensures hot water is delivered fast and efficiently. Low flow fixtures are WaterSense certified, appliances are Energy Star labeled, and all LED lighting. A Zehnder Novus 300 (93.3% efficient) HRV supplies 112 cfm of continuous fresh air while using only 32 watts of power and running quietly. The homeowners control the mechanical ventilation through the intuitive wall-mounted control pad to shut off or increase the ventilation. Chemicals and contaminants were reduced by using low VOC and GreenGuard certified sealants, adhesives, primers, and paints. A walk-off matt at the side entry and hardwood floors help control dirt and dust. The granite front steps were salvaged and local stone used for the patio and stone walls. Storm water runoff from the roof, patio, and driveway is managed by the rain garden. The native landscaping is low maintenance, a community garden produces vegetables, and the chicken coop is powered by its own roof mounted PV panels.
Taft School Director of Environmental Stewardship, Carly Borken has used the design and construction process as a teaching tool for her science classes. With access to the home monitoring system they can virtually access the residents’ consumption.

This one-of-a-kind wall portrait measures 20" x 16". The handsome and sporting gent with handlebar mustache poses proudly next to his penny farthing bicycle. Perhaps he was posing before the big race, or after with defeat or triumph? We will never know for the image dates about 1890. What we do know is that he is eternally and heroically memorialized in this one of a kind recreated gold-tinted metal portrait.
Originally, tintype portraits were made from the 1850's - 1900's, only a few inches tall and were printed with the wet plate collodion process, which these are not. I custom print my tintypes and age them with vintage tools, elbow grease and love so that they are large enough to hang and create a conversation piece in your home or office. All images come from my personal archive.
Each piece has character, peculiarities and a weathered look from aging techniques and are meant to feel like they were made in 1800's. No two are alike. It's very difficult to photograph metal, so please don't hesitate to ask any questions regarding these. Scuff's, scrapes, a smidgen of rust are all part of the details.
