Luxury custom kitchen with all the bells and whistles: paneled appliances (refrigerator, hood, trash compactor and dishwashers), glass cabinets, open book case, warehouse wine rack, seated island with prep sink for a second chef. This kitchen was designed by Kathryn in our Braintree showroom. This beautiful kitchen remodel features Showplace raised-panel cabinets with a gray paint, gorgeous Cambria quartz countertops with a pencil edge and full height backsplash, Berenson hardware, and Sub-Zero appliances. Unique features in this kitchen include an extra large island, finished paneling on all visible ends, including the fridge, dishwasher, trash compactor, and ice maker, as well as a custom bench attached to the island with extra storage drawers. AFTER We replaced the non-functioning trash compactor with this Kraftmaid auto-open wastebasket. We only have to replace the bag once a week, and it doesn't smell since all food scraps and food items are either recycled or composted. We love the auto-open feature. We bump it with our knee or hand and it opens and closes automatically. Expensive feature, but it is worth it to us, AND it keeps the white door front clean.

In order to help make the stove area the focal point of this kitchen, we designed a custom Wood-Mode red-painted distressed hood that matches the island finish and we changed the door style on the face of the hood to set it apart from the upper beadboard cabinets. The lower cabinet on the right side of the stove has a false front so that it matches the cabinet on the left side of the stove; it is really a trash compactor, not a regular cabinet. In order to make the two cabinets on the right side of the hood of equal size, a small wine rack was inserted between them!

Added the new refrigerator cabinet, added the trash compactor, replaced all of the doors, drawers, drawer fronts, drawer glides, cabinet hardware, and stained the existing cabinets. Added the spice pullout. Converted the old refrigerator cabinet to a pantry with pullout drawers.

We reconfigured the kitchen, living room and family room. Removed the wall between the kitchen and family room to make a great room. Moved all the appliances to exterior wall. Added a big island with a granite top and sink, fixtures, trash compactor, and wine fridge. New stovetop, new cabinets, walk in pantry. The works!

THE SETUP “You have to figure out how to rebuild a life worth living,” Basia Kozub’s client says. Her husband passed away suddenly three years ago. Holidays with family became more important, and she found herself struggling with a 37-year old kitchen that was falling apart. “I made a decision to move forward,” she says. “I went, ‘You know what? I’m redoing the kitchen.'” The big task of getting started was as easy as having a conversation – literally. Basia was on the job, helping the client sort through priorities, wishes and ideas. Basia’s client is 5′ 4″, likes keeping an eye on the kiddoes in the backyard and wanted certain things to have their own place. THE REMODEL The objectives were: Enlarge and open the space Find a classic look that incorporates blues Upgrade to easy-to-use appliances Hide an office space within the space Ample storage for dishes Design challenges: Uneven window alignment on the back wall Original kitchen smaller than desired, stuctural concerns if walls to be moved Keep folks close – figure out seating for entertaining Main sink in corner is ideal, but windows are hard to reach Lots of storage needed for dishes, glass collection, pantry items, bar bottles and office supplies Specific storage needs for oft-used spices and utensils THE RENEWED SPACE Design solutions: Replace back wall windows, establish window size continuity Take out two walls to open up the space, tall shallow cabinet and a tall filler added to conceal a new header Large island that seats six easily Custom corner sink cabinet with recessed edge allows vertically challenged homeowner to reach the windows Mindful storage planning features: plenty of cabinets, pull-out bar bottle storage, file drawers & cubbies with pocket doors for office appliances, magic corner pullouts, and appliance garages with pocket doors Shelf behind range for easy access to daily-use spices and oils. Also: spice and utensil pullouts on either side of range The clients says every priority and wish box got checked. The highly functional design absorbed everything that used to be in that area of the house, but now those things are out of the way. “In the past, we were all spread out when we gathered for the holidays, because we had to spread out. Now, we’re all in here together, including my 92-year old mother. We’re visiting, cooking, laughing… everyone is here. And I’m really learning how to use these appliances. This kitchen has given me a whole new life.”

New amenities include a two-drawer beverage fridge, a trash compactor, and new storage in the gigantic island. The island has room for cabinets on both sides, plus an overhang for extra seating in the kitchen. The color of the island is called dark shaker grey, and it contrasts nicely with the walls and hardware. Amazingly, the 48-inch range also provides space for a double oven underneath. The corner pantry was removed to enlarge the kitchen and instead, we added pantry cabinets with pull-out drawers.
