THE SETUP “You have to figure out how to rebuild a life worth living,” Basia Kozub’s client says. Her husband passed away suddenly three years ago. Holidays with family became more important, and she found herself struggling with a 37-year old kitchen that was falling apart. “I made a decision to move forward,” she says. “I went, ‘You know what? I’m redoing the kitchen.'” The big task of getting started was as easy as having a conversation – literally. Basia was on the job, helping the client sort through priorities, wishes and ideas. Basia’s client is 5′ 4″, likes keeping an eye on the kiddoes in the backyard and wanted certain things to have their own place. THE REMODEL The objectives were: Enlarge and open the space Find a classic look that incorporates blues Upgrade to easy-to-use appliances Hide an office space within the space Ample storage for dishes Design challenges: Uneven window alignment on the back wall Original kitchen smaller than desired, stuctural concerns if walls to be moved Keep folks close – figure out seating for entertaining Main sink in corner is ideal, but windows are hard to reach Lots of storage needed for dishes, glass collection, pantry items, bar bottles and office supplies Specific storage needs for oft-used spices and utensils THE RENEWED SPACE Design solutions: Replace back wall windows, establish window size continuity Take out two walls to open up the space, tall shallow cabinet and a tall filler added to conceal a new header Large island that seats six easily Custom corner sink cabinet with recessed edge allows vertically challenged homeowner to reach the windows Mindful storage planning features: plenty of cabinets, pull-out bar bottle storage, file drawers & cubbies with pocket doors for office appliances, magic corner pullouts, and appliance garages with pocket doors Shelf behind range for easy access to daily-use spices and oils. Also: spice and utensil pullouts on either side of range The clients says every priority and wish box got checked. The highly functional design absorbed everything that used to be in that area of the house, but now those things are out of the way. “In the past, we were all spread out when we gathered for the holidays, because we had to spread out. Now, we’re all in here together, including my 92-year old mother. We’re visiting, cooking, laughing… everyone is here. And I’m really learning how to use these appliances. This kitchen has given me a whole new life.”

As part of a complete remodel on this McKinney Avenue high rise condo, Edict designed a complete kitchen remodel. The cabinetry is 100% custom designed, no off the shelf or RTA cabinetry here. Made from rift cut white oak, the lighter cabinets have a clear coat natural finish and the darker cabinets are stained in an ebony finish giving a great sense of contrast and interest to this kitchen. The kitchen is packed with high end appliances including a Miele built in coffee machine, a wine fridge, Miele integrated hood and Miele gas cooktop as well as a deep single stainless steel sink, an integrated trash compactor and new integrated SubZero refrigerator. The kitchen's lighting has cable lighting for the main source of light which pulls in the industrial feel of the loft's exposed beams and ductwork, a new custom lightbox suspended above the new island with integrated LED cans and 3 pendants to light it. Also, above the ceiling panel, above the cabinets, under the cabinets and the toe kicks all have integrated LED lighting - all lighting is dimmable giving the most diverse options for a lighting solution. All of the cabinetry doors and drawers have Blum hardware and most are without handles for the most seamless look possible. Instead, one presses the drawers and cabinets and they pop open and close with soft close drawers. The large windows in this custom cherry kitchen add natural light and a feeling of connection to the outdoors. The stainless apron sink is practical and beautiful. The oversized island features deep drawers for storing dishes, pots & pans, and other cookware.

New amenities include a two-drawer beverage fridge, a trash compactor, and new storage in the gigantic island. The island has room for cabinets on both sides, plus an overhang for extra seating in the kitchen. The color of the island is called dark shaker grey, and it contrasts nicely with the walls and hardware. Amazingly, the 48-inch range also provides space for a double oven underneath. The corner pantry was removed to enlarge the kitchen and instead, we added pantry cabinets with pull-out drawers.

Added the new refrigerator cabinet, added the trash compactor, replaced all of the doors, drawers, drawer fronts, drawer glides, cabinet hardware, and stained the existing cabinets. Added the spice pullout. Converted the old refrigerator cabinet to a pantry with pullout drawers.

This kitchen is just complete! Bar fridge, fridge, island, dishwasher, trash compactor, builtin ovens, counter gas range, farm house sink, island seating, crown to ceiling, pantries, and plenty more.

Inspiration for a transitional home design remodel in Grand Rapids

Warmth, strength, texture and taste. This kitchen truly does make an impact with an arched brick ceiling, brick columns and brick walls featuring an inset gas fireplace. The furniture-like base cabinets sit below stained custom cabinets with glass doors and glass apothecary drawers. The appliance lineup includes SubZero Designer Series refrigeration, refrigerator drawers, Wolf range, over the counter microwave, an integrated trash compactor and integrated dishwasher. In this traditional kitchen design, the leather floor and the mahogany beams, crown molding and corbels create a traditional Tuscany feel.
