It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with the owners of this custom home while it was still under construction. The early planning allowed LWB to design the topographic features of the site to fit into the amenities that the clients desired such as an organically shaped swimming pool, a spa, planting, etc. The extreme grades in the backyard created an opportunity to place the spa overlooking the pool. The unique grading situation also allowed the pool utilities to be built underneath the lawn in a vented room, hidden from view. Waterfalls in the pool and a water wall help to create a relaxing experience in the homeowner's backyard.

The large spa has two sets of pumps, one allows for a gentle trickle of water flowing back into the pool, the other creates a massive sheet of water falling across the front of the grotto. The structure, made from natural Wiarton ledgerock, has a series of small ledges which are handy spots to place drinks or battery powered candles.

The client was anticipating a 'country cottage' feel to his home when he purchased it. They were never really happy with it, until the pool showed up! The pool needed to feel like a meandering stream as it made it's way down to the lower level. Views were important, and keeping the rear pond view was paramount! So, by manipulating the shape of the pool, adding an oversize flag stone shelf in the water, and providing a soothing 'trickling' waterfall, the image was complete! From the rear patio it looks and feels like you are sitting next to a back country stream!

At lunchtime one day I reclined as I watched the eagle fly over the creek bed nearby while grilling Highland Beef Steaks and a humming bird buzzed me and a Monarch butterfly landed on my arm. Was another world in the middle of a hectic day, that was hard to leave but knew I would be returning soon!

Just as the water flows from the oil-rubbed bronze faucets, pebbles trickle down the side of the shower like a river through the forest, cutting a clear path through the greens, providing life to its surroundings.

Designed for good energy...
Our client was looking to create a space for retreat, tranquility, serenity. The existing space was somewhat funky without balance and made it difficult to feel good. Working within an existing courtyard space, we were limited. No matter, our goal was to remedy this
outdoor courtyard/sunset balcony space. Our idea
was to keep the space cozy but create destination
spaces where you can lay down in the grass and look
up at the stars. Walk bare foot atop the different
hardscape surfaces, reclaimed brick patio & walkway,
Silvermist flagstone, terra cotta tiles & tiffway
bermuda. The idea of sitting in front of a magical
rock island stone fireplace reading a book, sharing
conversation with family & friends gives us warm feelings. Bubbling water features dance through out this space creating sounds of trickling brooks you could only hear if you were in a far far away place. The courtyard walls disappear, with plants and trees wrapping there arms around our client while relaxing under a 45 year old ascalone olive tree. A healing garden was the finished product, so much, its a space that you don't ever want to leave....

Details matter in luxury pools, and this fountain that trickles through the walkway to the pool is a detail that adds ambiance and interest.

The idea of this project was to create a special environment that stimulates all senses in the human body, an environment that is vibrant and most importantly interactive for all ages. We began by searching for the right materials to create a specific feeling of time and space.
Placement of the water feature was designed by studying how the customer used their home. The waterfalls and streams connect separate outdoor spaces and accommodate for all views outdoors and indoors. A sense of mystery is designed into every detail in this water feature. The layout of the ponds play accordingly with the sun for excellent reflections, and each rock formation has time designed into it.
The environment is inviting, and interactive. Each person that walks out to explore the environment has his or her curiosity rewarded by discovering plant life, trickling streams, and several waterfalls only to be discovered by the inquisitive explorer.

Design elements and features include six multi level paver patios, three permeable paver patios, and a sunken pool bar and kitchen with seating inside and outside the pool. A 20 foot double water falls drops into a pond with glass panels that separate the pool from the pond enabling views of koi. A 24 in. by 30 foot running/trickle water wall over natural stone into the the pool is also features. Additional items include three built-in bistro tables, a 20 foot high boulder wall system featuring perennial garden plantings, and floating boulders built into the pool.
Design challenges included a 12 foot high bar wall engineered with ¾ in. rebar and a solid concrete pour. Lower levels of the patio system were built and excavated below the water table level, so an extensive and creative drainage system was installed. In addition, water pumps were active during construction. Trenching was so extensive under and around the hardscape areas that all soil had to be removed from the site and replaced with compacted clean stone so there was no threat of future settlement. There was over 1500 cubic yards of soil removed from the site and over 1500 yards of aggregate trucked into the site.

It is hard not to find something that you love about this backyard. There are so many Elements That Make It Unique; the contrast textures in the deck which use both interlocking stone and stone wood planks under the chaise lounge area. There is also the contemporary spill over spa with water fall trickling into the pool. The sheer descent water feature across from the spill over spa add just another soothing feature to this gorgeous landscape. and last but not least, the pool itself uses a new exclusive liner pattern called Midnight Ocean which fits snuggly over the Full Width Steel Staircase.
Get comfy under cabana, warm up in the hot tub or cool down in the pool – enjoy every aspect of your backyard. Stay Outside Longer And Entertain More Often!

One of McKinley Burkart’s most aesthetically traditional projects, the Island Residence is a 15,000 square foot house made of pavilions and low bridges, completely surrounded by water. McKinley Burkart worked closely with landscape architects to design a residence that is fully integrated with its site. Water flows from a small fountain and trickles down, flowing throughout the site under glass bridges featuring the koi fish that populate the stream. The house implements Asian planning principles of connecting indoor and outdoor space using pavilions and bridges yet brings forth a West Coast, heavy timber aesthetic throughout the whole residence.
