Dramatic modern addition to a 1950's colonial. The project program was to include a Great Room and first floor Master Suite. While the existing home was traditional in many of its components, the new addition was to be modern in design, spacious, open, lots of natural light, and bring the outside in. The new addition has 10’ ceilings. A sloped light monitor extends the height of the Great Room to a 13’+ ceiling over the great room, 8’ doors, walls of glass, minimalist detailing and neutral colors. The new spaces have a great sense of openness bringing the greenery from the landscaping in.

In a rural stretch of East Hampton not far from the beach, the client presented a program for this summer home that called for open, casual entertaining and an extension of interior living spaces to the outdoors -- a counterpoint to his boxy Upper West Side pre-war apartment. We looked to local agrarian building forms and materials, as well as the Modernist tradition of the Hamptons, to develop a contextual vernacular appropriate to the quaint and peaceful property.

The ceiling was raised, ducts re-routed and soffits built to house the vents, a window added next to the fireplace, the angled wall eliminated, new flooring, maple plank wainscot added to two walls to bring unity from the upstairs down. LED color changing lightstrips can be programmed to change color or you can pick a color depending on your mood. With music or movies playing through the surround sound system and the light strips changing color, it make for a festive environment after a day on the water.
