The design for two new blocks of affordable family housing at Hunters View is the first phase of San Francisco’s ambitious HOPE SF program—a plan to revitalize the worst of San Francisco’s crime-ridden and forgotten low-income neighborhoods. With a mix of affordable and market rate housing, the Hunters View Redevelopment is being completed in three phases in order to allow the existing tenants to remain in the neighborhood. The work on Phase I included 53 units on blocks 5 & 6. The units were designed as stacked townhomes with buildings stepping down along the streets in patterns typical of traditional San Francisco row housing. Four buildings surround two mid-block courtyards that provide shared and secure open space. Hunters View was certified LEED for Neighborhood Design (LEED ND) as well as GreenPoint Rated. Please note: On September 26, 2015, there are two limited, guided tours of the affordable housing project Hunters View Housing with the Design Team at 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM ONLY. This kitchen is an example of the small kitchen that is interesting, functional and appealing. The eat-in section of this island was designed with tapered legs in order to create the feel of a country kitchen table, enhancing the "up country" flavor of this open room. Random width, beaded-board paneling, complements the beaded, flat-panel cabinet doors. The project was to gut renovate a white brick vintage 1950’s typical cookie cutter apartment. The spaces have north and south views over looking the famed Dakota Apartments with vistas of Central Park. The living room and dining area have two exposures providing good daylight and the best views. Although the ceiling heights are eight foot a two inch drop was constructed in order to run electrical wiring for flush mounted lights. The two inch ceiling drop also enable the design to create soffits that define room shapes. A large Sultanabad rug covers the living floor, a sofa from Holly Hunt, a custom designed table, a vintage Eames chair and ottoman, a glass and polished chrome side table from Brueton Furniture along with the client’s antique furniture compliment the rooms’ modern style. The dining table and chairs are antique Chippendale and the Thailand silver decorated chest with an early 19th century American weather vane add style to the space and comfortable dining seating.
