On the floor we went with a dolomite marble tile, that is like a geometric daisy. We also used the same dolomite marble behind the vanity wall. This time I decided to a herringbone pattern, as it was just the right amount of elegance needed, to leave that lasting impression. The same herringbone tile, was also repeated in the shower area, this time as a waterfall feature, along with a larger dolomite tile. The shower niche, was kept clean and simple, but we did use the same marble from the vanity top, for the niche shelves. Among our Houston outdoor kitchens, this one is unique because of its concrete countertops, pergola with stucco wrapping and custom storage. "It's not one of our biggest covered outdoor kitchens in Houston," says Outdoor Homescapes of Houston owner Wayne Franks. "But it's unique, and it looks really nice, too!" The client, a young family, wanted an outdoor kitchen with a more minimalistic, modern look, explains Outdoor Homescapes senior designer Lisha Maxey. "They're both doctors and very much attuned to detail," she says. "Their primary goal was to create a space where they could lounge while the children played as well as an area to entertain family and friends while cooking and dining outside." Like a growing number of people wanting small outdoor kitchens in Houston, this client expressed interest in using concrete as a surface material: "The look is contemporary and is easily paired with any type of outdoor furniture," says Maxey, "from wicker to teak to iron." "The seating/storage bin was not a part of the original design," says Lisha. "As the project progressed, the client expressed interest in some sort of chest for the new outdoor furniture cushions to be stored in." The design for the storage bin was developed to accommodate this request: "It eventually evolved into a seating area as well. And to keep the look consistent with the new kitchen, it was agreed that the stone be carried through the design. The wood top was necessary so we could design a hinged access for storage."

North Shore Residence VIII. Should I stay or should I go? This beautiful, loving family moved into their suburban home when their kids were toddlers and forged friendships and a strong connection to their neighborhood. The time came when they were faced with the decision and the question, “Do we invest in and renovate our kitchen and master suite, or do we move?” These clients were my second, and have been with me since day one. They called upon me to redecorate their dining room and family room 7 years ago, and we met and talked several times weighing the pros and cons of investing in their home or investing in a move. Ultimately, they decided to stay, and here is a glimpse into what we created together with their architect and builder. Their home has a traditional lay out with a kitchen that connects to the dining room. We purposely designed the dining room to have an inviting, casual yet elegant aesthetic 7 years ago…..a dining room that could also function as a family kitchen table, a homework space, a cozy and also generously proportioned shabbat dinner invite the neighbors over space, and would eventually welcome an updated kitchen. Our client contemplated replacing their existing kitchen wood floor with tile, but we decided to preserve and refinish the wood floor to add continuity and warmth to the entire first floor. Because the kitchen was adjacent to the dining room, and not to the family room, changing the floor to tile would have created a fragmented feeling, and our goal was to create cohesiveness. Because the kitchen opens to the outdoor living space and swimming pool, wood is not typically ideal with wet slippery feet, but we went for it, and they are happy we did! We are mixed metal fans, and love to play with scale. Behold the voluptuous island pendants, chunky island countertop, satin bras modern hex pulls and knobs, and a combo of cerused white perimeter flat panel cabinets with a gray shaker island. Our client desired to conceal the clutter, so the walk in pantry and appliance garages came into play. The open floating shelves above the “desert bar” add visual interest and a place for family photos. We added a home office/man cave for the hubby and a dreamy walk in closet for the wifey along with an upstairs laundry room and zen spa master bath complete with a steam shower, water closet that allows for TV viewing from the vanity mirror, a soaking tub, and a coffee bar by creating a dormering the ceiling above the garage and converting attic space. Award Winning project by Shane Cook Design. This project features a highly customized floor plan, not typical to the building, and interiors on an upper floor of Houston’s dominant upper Kirby high-rise condominium. The challenge of this project was to provide the maximum amount of wall space to feature the client’s world-class contemporary art collection, while at the same time leaving an open, airy, contemporary living space. Lighting design, also by Mr. Cook, was integral to the client’s need to properly light the art, while at the same time allow for flexibility in the rotation of pieces from the collection. The floating ceiling elements in the entry area and living/dining areas help to both define individual spaces and organize the lighting fixtures. The North side of the ceiling element over the living/dining area follows the swooping curve of the building exterior and helps engage the building’s freestanding structural column. A meticulously detailed palate of neutral materials was chosen to create no competition with the featured artworks. While color is incorporated, it is kept to a “tone-on-tone” basis. A step up from the main living area into the kitchen serves to both give the overall space more of an open loft effect and separate this more utilitarian area. The curve of the steps up into the kitchen/tv area gives a sculptural quality to the space and plays off of the curve of the building’s facade. Custom designed items, all by Shane Cook, include the wool and silk entry rug, ceiling elements with integrated lighting (including the electronic files needed for the CNC machine laser cutting of the ceiling’s panels and reveals), dining table, and master bath vanity. Furniture selection was also by Mr. Cook. The interiors of this high end luxury apartment spanning over 3500sqft in M3M GolfEstate, one of the most sought after societies in G-town, is an exquisite blend of classic and contemporary aesthetics dominated by abundant natural light & fresh breeze swooshing through. This 5 bedroom home belonging to a family of 2 and a shih tzu, had an advantage of 10 feet high ceilings, which contributed immensely to the grandeur of the space. Formal area- On entering the apartment, the visitor will be blown by the resplendence of the formal area. The use of different textures along with muted tones with a subtle pop of teal and tall palms, the luster of exotic backlit marble, and a very unconventional ceiling design helped conjure the chic and welcoming vibe. For the dining area, we let the gift of natural light play a major role in making the otherwise narrow space look more airy and bright by not only using lighter hues of beige and ivory, but also by adding just a single layer of sheer curtain. We decided to steer away from the typical ‘chairs and console’ look for the 10 feet wide and 20 feet long passage leading to the bedrooms, and went with an offbeat conception of a crystal chandelier hovering over a state of the art horn and bone round table, that captivates anyone and everyone. The smart play of wooden reapers on the ceiling, under lit onyx for the front counter, and a dramatic black & white marble on the backsplash make for the perfect ‘fun evening with friends’ corner as it exudes the right amount of warmth with brown tones, and an oomph factor with the rich looking onyx. Master bedroom- The client's vision of having a cool toned yet welcoming bedroom was achieved by using grey and brown hues. The flooring, which sets the main color scheme of any space, was swapped with glossy grey tiles from the warm beige Diana, to maximize the illusion of a bigger space. We took the liberty of accentuating the room with a faux archway of wooden louvered panels, which not only complement the rustic yet clean TV unit and wall color, but also take care of the cozy and relaxing vibe. To add some bling and that luxury quotient to the space, we chose a good quality vegan leather for the bed with some brushed gold metal strips on the headboard. In the form of color, some pink accents were used on armchairs, rugs and artworks, which was a crucial vastu rectification to make up for the nitty gritties. Home office- The one good that came with the pandemic was the need for most clients to have a home office, which for us designers meant that we can bring to life our very own rendition of the oh-so-aesthetic pinterest-y den / office concepts we come across. For this space, we kept the design minimal, clean and timeless with a classic tan chesterfield, an exposed white brick wall, a dark ceiling with customized sputnik inspired color changing lights, and a massive workstation doubling as a gaming altar for the end user. The client’s only wish was to have an office that was fit to entertain his friends post work hours.

Jennifer and Dan have lived in their Deer Park Illinois home for 15 years, slowly making minor fixes like painting and decorating; but they had a new plan for their kitchen the entire time. An awkwardly placed garage door, and an island cooktop with a terrible downdraft made a full-scale kitchen remodel an absolute must. Jennifer had many ideas in mind and wanted to work with a company that could provide high-end work, while partnering with a designer that would tailor the kitchen to her ideas. She was intrigued by the phrase “Common Sense Remodeling” in Advance Design’s feature she discovered while perusing an issue of the community’s Quintessential Barrington Magazine. Doing further research on the company’s website, as she looked through project profiles and read about Advance Design’s “Common Sense Remodeling” philosophy, she promptly scheduled an appointment to see if the people and ideas she read about were truly who they said they were. The more she read, the more she knew that the “Common Sense” approach to remodeling they described was exactly the type of company she was looking for. The partnership was sealed after an initial consultation with Owner Todd Jurs and Project Designer Michelle Lecinski. They displayed a combination of friendliness, professionalism and respect that was unmatched by any of the other companies Jennifer talked to. She knew that with Advance Design, she would be able to retain the vision that she had in mind with high-quality craftsmanship. “I reached out to Advance Design because of the ‘Common Sense Remodeling’ tagline,” Jennifer said. “That’s what lingered for me”. “Advance Design was the most respectful- of the house and of my design ideas, and the most professional of the handful of companies that looked at my project”. Soon after the meeting Jennifer began working with Michelle on the project design. They quickly developed chemistry. Jennifer loved how Michelle researched and located every detail that Jennifer wanted for the kitchen. Between the two of them, every concept and idea was worked through and perfected. “Jennifer had definite ideas about what she wanted the new kitchen to look like, she just didn’t know how to bring it all together. We worked together really well to make her ideas into the practical reality necessary for a well-functioning kitchen, with the look and feel that she had envisioned”, says Michelle. “Michelle was wonderful in using the CAD system she would show me new drawings every time we changed the layout while working through the design,” Jennifer said. “She was a really wonderful partner in execution, she made sure everything happened quickly and easily.” The finished design drew out elements of Jennifer’s style and personality. The pair call the look “sophisticated farmhouse” to describe the kitchen renovation to family and friends. The result was a beautifully crafted, authentic-feeling space that satisfied Jennifer’s dreams 15 years in the making. The whole project consisted of a kitchen remodel, mudroom upgrade with powder room, and garage entry relocation. “The projects I personally like the best, are the ones that put the client’s dreams on display,” Project Designer Michelle said. “And this is one of those projects.” The main focal point of the kitchen is custom zinc and brass ventilation hood with a vintage sheen, which was hand made to order by a small company in Indiana named Vogler Metalworking. “It’s like sculpture, a true work of art”, says Jennifer. Your eye is immediately drawn towards this elegant yet practical hood that eliminated the home’s downdraft problem and added a striking conversation piece at the same time. The carpenters had to use special gloves when transporting and installing it, so they didn’t smudge it with fingerprints. The beautiful hood centers proudly over the stunning black enamel and brass LaCornue Range. “I had a friend who had a LaCornue range and after learning how easy it was to cook perfect meals, I was convinced I wanted to have one”, says Jennifer. This unique, breathtaking combination anchors the entire kitchen and is apparent immediately as you walk into the great room the surrounds the space. DuraSupreme Crestwood cabinets with a Kendall Panel add function and sophistication. A custom gray paint color paired with a storm blue was developed so that the new kitchen looked like it belonged to the existing space. Unlacquered brass faucets and hardware were important to Jennifer because she wanted the living finishes to age over time. Remarkable brass diamond mesh cabinet door inserts imported from the UK continue to add this one-of-a-kind kitchen renovation; giving it a “you won’t see this everywhere” quality. The use of old railcar flooring for the coffee bar countertop and reclaimed oak for the open shelving gives an authenticity to the space uncommon in kitchens today. Jennifer and Michelle fell in love with the Limestone Grey Stone while they were investigating unique island countertop ideas. They liked the fact that the limestone as a living finish will age and change over time. Calcutta Miel Quartz countertops made for an excellent pairing around the perimeter, as it’s durable and perfect for cooking preparations. A textured white subway tile backsplash that runs to the ceiling keeps your eye moving towards the open shelving, and to the main focal point of the stunning range hood combination. “The kitchen functions beautifully, and it’s gorgeous,” beams Jennifer as she gestures with both hands while smiling ear to ear. “The most important thing was I wanted a kitchen that had a wonderful flow, cooked beautiful meals and was a great gathering place for family and friends, and this space does that perfectly! Beauty wise, it turned out exactly how I had envisioned. I felt the function part was the hardest part, and that was nailed”! Relocating the garage entry to the new mudroom was a huge priority and has finally separated the family’s arriving home functions from their kitchen. Now coats and shoes and bags have their own area for dropping once members arrive home. Matching gray DuraSupreme cabinetry helped create gorgeous, purposeful lockers for the family. A reclaimed vintage sink and custom wall paper were added to the tiny powder room to beautify the once previously only functional space. Advance Design was even able to create a custom space for their dog to sleep while the family is away. “It was unbelievable that a project of this size was completed in such a short time, and I think that’s because of the large amount of planning and preparation that went into it,” Jennifer marveled, “When we started, we were ready, and everything was prepared”. When it came to execution, Project Manager Justin Davis and his crew were quick, accessible, and organized. Projects like this kitchen are typically completed in as little as 8-10 weeks. Jennifer’s kitchen however despite the relocation of some challenging HVAC in a soffit and moving of an exterior door was completed remarkably fast in part because the team was working with an existing tile floor that ran throughout the first floor that the client really loved. “You get to know these people really well because they’re living in your house while you’re living in your house. They were so fast and really good, it didn’t take as long as even planned” reported Jennifer. “I would text Justin and he always responded almost immediately. I got to know all the guys who were working in our house and they were all wonderful people”. Details in a customized kitchen like this one require skill and care from the people who install it. “All the guys on the job were skilled at what the did. I wanted small details like little feet to look like furniture, that is where their carpentry skill came in to make these all perfect”, said Jennifer. “The tile guys were wonderful. They even let me determine how I wanted the texture with the grout to appear for a salt and pepper look; now that is a very skilled trade person making it custom”. In Jennifer’s interview, she continued to reference Advance Design’s “Common Sense Remodeling”, so I took a minute to ask her exactly what that phrase meant to her and how it played out in her experience with her project and the Advance Design team. Here is what she said: “I was intrigued about Common Sense Remodeling and in my head that there would be clear costs and prices, great communication between the design team, the execution team and me”, said Jennifer. They did deliver on that, it was so clear about the cost breakdown, what I could expect from everyone who came to my house, and everything that we had ordered. That to me is the Common Sense”! It’s great to see a client take literally our assertion that a well-planned remodeling project is simply “Common Sense”!
