Large, wedge-shaped mouldings create a unique style around the room, including the crafting of the fireplace treatment. The custom oil finish was applied using a dry brush technique which highlights the Fir’s natural graining. The chair rail installed vertically, creates a unique wainscot that draws in your gaze. Use these elements as the setting to create a Southwest Style with sun-washed tones. Go Mountain Modern by dry brushing a cool grey stain. Create a mid-century Bungalow feel by letting the Fir grain show through a warm whitewashed paint. So many places to land when you start here.

Inspiration for a modern dining room remodel in Louisville

Custom modern vertical grained bamboo frameless cabinets with full overlay doors were selected for their beauty, clean lines, minimal impact on the environment and the unique desired finishes. A rich Espresso color was selected for the perimeter cabinets while contrasting with the lighter caramelized finish of the island. The former refrigerator wall became a wall of 17” deep pantry cabinets to accommodate a built in coffee bar with toaster that is hidden from view with two matching pocket doors. To break up the massing of the wall, two aluminum framed glass full overlay doors with touch latches were added with tempered decorative rain glass. Additional efficient storage features of the cabinetry included tray dividers and three pull out drawers in the bottom drawer of the pantry cabinet, the new counter depth refrigerator was relocated to the opposite wall and housed in a full depth cabinet. Matching vertical grained bamboo espresso panels were used to finish the front face of the refrigerator. Long vertical stainless steel bar pulls were used on the doors for a linear accent. One of the focal points in the kitchen is the range wall which was updated with a 30” stainless steel Electrolux designer glass canopy wall mount exhaust hood with dual halogen lights. It’s flanked by a rich blend of vertical honed marble mosaics and vertical grained full overlay bamboo espresso wall cabinets with glass inserts. The top of the cabinets feature a vertical grained bamboo banding with a caramelized finish. The base blind cabinet to the right of the stove has three corner drawers that allow for easy access. The existing peninsula that hampered floor traffic was removed and replaced with a 42”x84” central island featuring an abundance of storage via drawers, doors and easily accessible microwave which maximizes the counter working space. The island also serves a dual purpose in allowing for additional large flat space for quilting. The decorative tile pattern behind the range is a cascade canyon mosaic marble installed vertically in two bands of different widths creating visual interest. The sink has been upgraded to a Kohler Undertone undermount stainless steel sink with a Brizo pull-down touchless faucet with smart technology. The countertop chosen is a 3cm Delicatus Granite with a T edge treatment which complements the wood tones of the cabinetry.

As the couple travels frequently, we added some homey comforts, like a deep shag rug in their bedroom. Individual channel-tufted panels of ivory vegan leather on the master bedroom’s headboard wall, bring a sophisticated feature to this room’s design. The custom Vanguard bed incorporates upholstered side rails made of the same vegan leather.

Out with the Old and in with the New In the first three pictures you will see the old kitchen. Old cabinets, old appliances, old sink, old wallpaper, old floor. You get the picture. It’s old. So, an update is in order. First, the clients chose to have their “still good cabinets” to be refaced. They chose a creamy white and the doors and drawers were replaced. If you aren’t familiar with refacing, the other wood on the cabinet is covered with a thin veneer making the entire cabinet look new. Countertops – Not wanting granite with its swirls and shiny surface, the clients opted for quartz. At the time of this renovation, quartz was a rather new concept. The quartz pattern is Sonora Gold which is in the textured category of Silestone. They wanted a warm inviting kitchen and the tan/orange undertone fit the bill. Next, Sink – Of course, as almost everyone who renovates their kitchen, they wanted an undermount sink. They chose a double granite undermount sink with an oil rubbed faucet set to go along with the drawer pulls and black trim in the kitchen. After that, flooring was installed. This is a vinyl that looks like stone. Not wanting the cold feel of stone and the hardness on the ol’ knees, this was a good choice. The vinyl picked up the colors of the countertops and paint along with a few flecks of black. Good choice! A custom made island was installed. This has a black base and the quartz countertop. When this was made, the installer said no, an island will not fit in this kitchen. You need the cabinets to open with 3’ clearance. I measured and put down paper in the shape of the island to simulate where the island would be. It fit nicely and as you can see, added not only storage but another surface on which to work. Appliances were added and the client wanted top of the line so GE Profile with its good reviews and quality, were installed. We went with white to contrast the white cabinets but overall give the kitchen a brighter feel. The paint chosen is Sienna Sand on top which blended well with the countertops as both have orange undertones and played nicely together. The bottom half of the oak chair rail was painted Pencil Point black to go with the island and faucets and drawer pulls. The finished look is an unexpected kitchen with warmth and comfort along with plenty of storage and working areas. The clients were very happy with the finished project. Out with the old and in with the new!
