Eichler X-100 Family Room: The Social Core of a Modernist Vision
The family room in the Eichler X-100 is where the home truly comes alive—a space designed not just for gathering, but for experiencing architecture in motion. Created by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons for Joseph Eichler, it embodies the ideal balance between openness, comfort, and innovation.
A Structure That Disappears
At first glance, the room feels effortlessly open—but that freedom is the result of the X-100’s steel-frame construction, which eliminates the need for interior support walls. This allows the family room to function as a true uninterrupted volume, seamlessly connected to adjacent spaces.
The structure is still present—expressed through subtle steel elements—but it never interrupts the flow.
Light-Filled and Ever-Changing
The family room is bathed in natural light from every direction:
Floor-to-ceiling glass walls bring in expansive views and daylight
Overhead skylights soften and diffuse light across the space
Reflections from surrounding surfaces create a gentle, dynamic glow
From morning to evening, the room shifts in tone and atmosphere, making it feel alive and responsive.
Living Without Boundaries
One of the defining qualities of the family room is its ability to blur boundaries. Large sliding glass panels open directly to the outdoors, transforming the space into an indoor-outdoor pavilion.
Whether open or closed, the connection to nature is constant—air, light, and landscape are always part of the experience.
Designed for Everyday Life
Unlike more formal living spaces, the family room is grounded in functionality. It’s where:
Conversations happen naturally
Daily routines unfold
Relaxation and connection take center stage
The openness allows for flexibility—furniture arrangements, uses, and moods can evolve without constraint.
Views That Extend Through the Home
From this space, sightlines stretch across the home—often landing on interior gardens or atriums. This creates a layered visual experience where multiple zones are always in dialogue with one another.
The effect is subtle but powerful:
you are always aware of the entire home, not just the room you’re in.
The Essence of Eichler Living
The family room captures what made Eichler homes revolutionary—a focus on how people actually live. It’s not about formality or separation, but about connection, openness, and ease.
In the X-100, that idea is pushed to its highest level—creating a space that feels as relevant today as it did in 1956. image Sabrina Huang

Contemporary bathroom ideas unfold in details: discreet outlets, integrated seating, and symmetrical faucets that echo the geometry of the cabinetry. Our journey with this client began with a major interior remodel, focusing on transforming their kitchen and living room into something extraordinary. But as the project unfolded, their vision expanded. Why stop at the interior? Inspired by the stunning changes inside, they decided it was time to elevate the exterior—and incorporate a thoughtful addition—to match the same standard.
This home received a full exterior facelift with durable, low-maintenance materials like Hardi siding, Azek decking, and PVC flat roofing. The goal was to enhance Puget Sound views and create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
The west-facing wall, once limited to two small kitchen windows, now features a 12-foot, four-panel sliding door, flooding the space with light and improving access. A rebuilt deck with tempered glass panels and a sleek Clearview railing system enhances openness and visibility.
Inside, the dark, closed-off kitchen became a bright, modern space with extended cabinetry, a minimalist design, and improved flow. Thoughtful updates turned this home into a stunning, open-concept retreat.

The Busset: The sleek lines of this mantel are typical of Louis XVI style. The straight jambs are topped with rosettes. The entablature features a motif of volute waves running across a set of symmetrically unfolding pomegranates.

These clients wanted a landscape that had a sense of flow, of unfolding, of mysteries revealed. They love art and were open to ideas beyond the traditional themes, and so the swirls and circles of artist Sonia Delaunay, became the inspiration for this gorgeous coastal property in Cohasset, MA.
This garden was inspired by the art of Sonia Delaunay. Along the entire length of the house we made a sweeping serpentine stone wall that swerves around like a great dragon tail. In front of it are deep beds filled with Euphorbia, Lavender, Geranium, Coreopsis, Salvia, and Hakonechloa grass. They sing with blues, purples and yellows, the homeowners’ favorite colors.

Framed by mature trees and nestled within Sarasota’s historic McClellan Park, Sunset Place is a home shaped by a deep understanding of, and sensibility for, its setting—reflecting the charm of the neighborhood, the rhythm of downtown living, and the client’s vision of entertaining, connection, and family life. Every decision—from site strategy to spatial flow—was made with intention: to support a lifestyle centered on warmth, community, and a strong sense of place.
At its core, the project is a masterclass in leveraging zoning and code to unlock the full potential of a complex site. Though landlocked, the home lives like waterfront—offering openness, privacy, and expansive sunset views. Placing the pool in the front yard, within the 25-foot setback, redefines the entry experience. It captures the western light and sets a relaxed, resort-like tone from the very first step inside the gate. Paired with a rear-loaded garage, accessed discreetly via the side setback, the layout transforms the site’s limitations into its greatest assets. Architecture and landscape take center stage, while the full buildable envelope is maximized without compromise.
A natural rise of eight feet from front to back—rare in Sarasota—was embraced as an opportunity. Site walls function as both retaining structures and architectural elements, elevating the pool terrace and entry by over four feet to align with the main interior floor level. The result is a fluid connection between indoors and out: kitchen, dining, and living spaces unfold onto the terrace, blurring boundaries and enhancing everyday rituals as well as social gatherings.
Architecturally, the home is coastal contemporary: open yet composed, airy yet grounded. Clarity in the massing tells a story of the inhabitants from the first glance, while the interior planning offers spatial generosity and ease. The interiors echo this sensibility with a palette that is soft, natural, and tactile—serene without being neutral. The landscape design provides a lush tropical frame, softening edges and reinforcing privacy through layered plantings rather than enclosure.
Ultimately, Sunset Place is not defined by any single gesture, but by the way the home reflects its owners. Their gracious, family-centered nature informed every layer of design—resulting in a space that feels deeply personal, tailored for connection and ease, and perfectly suited for gathering, unwinding, and watching the sun slip behind the trees from the comfort of home.

This 1950s ranch is transported into the 21century with a modestly expanded footprint and open floor plan. Modern boxes clad in reclaimed wood siding merge with the existing brick facade which has been simply transformed with a crisp, white paint job and new gable roof. Designed for a professional chef, the new marble-topped kitchen, with its 10 foot long wood and steel dining island, provides the perfect gathering space for socializing while watching his culinary creations unfold. Expanded glass openings, large sliding doors and skylights provide a wash of natural light while connecting the interior to the landscape beyond.

The Petal & Poppy Home is a vibrant, collected family residence defined by bold color, layered pattern, and a confident sense of personality. Designed over several years as the young family grew, the home reflects an evolving story rooted in warmth, creativity, and a love of expressive interiors.
Color guided the design from the outset. A blue grasscloth dining room and an existing pink Persian rug in the formal living room became the foundation for a palette that unfolded organically throughout the home. With clients eager to mix patterns and embrace saturated hues, the design process focused on contrast, cohesion, and joyful self-expression.
The entry makes an immediate statement with a playful spotted stair runner, oversized artwork, and a high-gloss black handrail that introduces graphic contrast. The formal living room, designed for entertaining, is the moodiest space in the home. Dark garnet walls and a commissioned piece by local artist Carrie Gillen create a dramatic backdrop, while pink tweed swivel chairs and a tailored charcoal sofa complete a space designed for lingering.
Beyond French doors, the home office is an immersive mix of pattern and color, with wallpaper wrapping both walls and ceiling. A leopard carpet and modern crystal chandelier add a touch of glamour, resulting in a space that feels energizing and personal. The dining room continues the confident use of blue, layering patterns around a custom round pedestal table designed for everyday meals and gatherings alike.
At the heart of the home, the family room was designed for togetherness. A bright blue sectional anchors the space, complemented by custom ottomans on hidden casters and softened with tailored throw pillows. Existing bookshelves are refreshed with a Peter Fasano wallcovering, creating a collected, lived-in backdrop.
Upstairs, the primary suite offers a softer expression of color, blending blues, oranges, and pinks, while built-in window benches add moments of comfort. The children’s bedrooms balance playfulness with longevity, layered with color and texture designed to grow alongside them.
The Petal & Poppy Home is a celebration of color, creativity, and family life—an interior that feels intentionally layered, expressive, and deeply personal, designed to evolve over time.

The Calyx Collection blurs the lines between indoor & outdoor living, endlessly inspired by the simple yet ever changing lines of a bloom unfolding. The wide crown over a tightened base form the elegant silhouette for the Calyx from a matrix of interwoven strands. Materials: polyethylene and steel.

The best architecture allows what has come before it to be seen and cared for while at the same time injecting something new, if not idealistic. Spartan at first glance, the interior of this stately apartment building, located on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, quickly begins to unfold as a calculated series of textures, visual artifacts and perfected aesthetic continuities.
The client, a globe-trotting entrepreneur, selected Jeanne Schultz Design Studio for the remodel and requested that the space be reconditioned into a purposeful and peaceful landing pad. It was to be furnished simply using natural and sustainable materials. Schultz began by gently peeling back before adding only the essentials, resulting in a harmoniously restorative living space where darkness and light coexist and comfort reigns.
The design was initially guided by the fireplace—from there a subtle injection of matching color extends up into the thick tiered molding and ceiling trim. “The most reckless patterns live here,” remarks Schultz, referring to the checkered green and white tiles, pink-Pollack-y stone and cast iron detailing. The millwork and warm wood wall panels devour the remainder of the living room, eliminating the need for unnecessary artwork.
A curved living room chair by Kave Home punctuates playfully; its shape reveals its pleasant conformity to the human body and sits back, inviting rest and respite. “It’s good for all body types and sizes,” explains Schultz. The single sofa by Dareels is purposefully oversized, casual and inviting. A beige cover was added to soften the otherwise rectilinear edges. Additionally sourced from Dareels, a small yet centrally located side table anchors the space with its dark black wood texture, its visual weight on par with the larger pieces. The black bulbous free standing lamp converses directly with the antique chandelier above. Composed of individual black leather strips, it is seemingly harsh—yet its soft form is reminiscent of a spring tulip.
The continuation of the color palette slips softly into the dining room where velvety green chairs sit delicately on a cascade array of pointed legs. The doors that lead out to the patio were sanded down and treated so that the original shape and form could be retained. Although the same green paint was used throughout, this set of doors speaks in darker tones alongside the acute and penetrating daylight. A few different shades of white paint were used throughout the space to add additional depth and embellish this shadowy texture.
Specialty lights were added into the space to complement the existing overhead lighting. A wall sconce was added in the living room and extra lighting was placed in the kitchen. However, because of the existing barrel vaulted tile ceiling, sconces were placed on the walls rather than above to avoid penetrating the existing architecture.

This Fort Worth residence, originally built in 1983, was reimagined for homeowners who wanted to remain in a home they loved while elevating it for the way they live today. Designed and built by USI Design & Remodeling, the project unfolded in three phases over an 8yr period, beginning with a complete primary bath reconfiguration that removed an oversized corner tub, reset the toilet location, and created a larger shower, improved circulation, and dedicated his-and-hers storage.
The second and third phases expanded the soft contemporary design language throughout the home, including a second primary-level bath, kitchen, breakfast area, family room, laundry, dining spaces, flooring, doors, trim, cabinetry, and architectural detailing. Natural stone, maple millwork, curated lighting, garden views, and gallery-like focal points were used to create a cohesive interior that feels lighter, more personal, and more refined while honoring the home’s original character.

Set on 88th Street in Manhattan's Upper East Side, this four-bedroom residence was created by merging two separate condominium units into a single, cohesive luxury home. The result is a sprawling, artful space defined by confidence, color, and a deeply personal design vocabulary.
The project represents a full-service interior design engagement: spatial planning, material selection, furniture sourcing, artwork curation, and complete project coordination. Nearly every element was specified and placed by Mazen Designs, with furnishings sourced largely through Roche Bobois.
The home unfolds from a striking cross-shaped hallway anchored by a custom T-shaped rug that guides movement through the space. To one side, the primary bedroom suite. To the other, a flexible home office that doubles as a guest suite, and a tranquil secondary bedroom. Straight ahead, a streamlined kitchen opens to a formal dining area and beyond that, a dedicated media and Mah Jong room designed for relaxed gathering.
The palette balances jewel tones with crisp whites and greys. Bold in intention but disciplined in execution. A Maya Romanoff wall covering and curated artwork complete the layering of texture, light, and silhouette throughout. The clients arrived hesitant toward color. Through open dialogue and a shared trust in design as storytelling, they left with a home that reflects genuine courage and clarity.
