With complete surrounding water views of the Atlantic and the Intracoastal, each apartment has its own unique characteristics and features. The concept of this building was a site specific design incorporating concrete, wood, steel, and glass to take full advantage of all prevailing winds and 360 degree views. The plan was designed around the organic shape of the nautilus, the freer of all space and giver of all life. A form that is actually ever present in nature, it allows the building to seamlessly coexist with the surrounding tropical environment.

Housed atop a sand dune overlooking a crescent shaped beach, this updated innovative shingle style home replaced an existing vacation home our clients purchased a number of years ago. Significantly upgrading what was previously there, the single characteristic they wanted to maintain was a curved glass element that made the home distinctly identifiable from the beach. The height of the dune is unique for the area and well above flood plane which permits living space on all three levels of the home. Choreographed to fit within the natural landscape, guests entering the home from the front porch are immediately greeted with stunning views of the ocean. Delicate wood paneling and textural details are illuminated by abundant natural light flooding the home. East and West facing stairs are greeted with a wash of sunlight in the morning and evening, illuminating paths to breakfast and returning to rest. Photo by Brennan Wesley

▪ Old Bones | New Life ▪ . . These reclaimed heartpine timbers were salvaged from the Old Crow Bourbon distillery in Frankfort, KY. To appreciate reclaimed materials is to embrace the allure of imperfection. The designer term for this is wabi-sabi, a Japanese philosophy that celebrates the beauty of aesthetic imperfections. Every mark bears an element in the tapestry of the wood's life. Like a scar with a story, these characteristics are unique, adding to the inherent beauty of the material. These features should never be viewed as defects, but as extraordinary remnants of a past life repurposed to make present-day more beautiful. ________ Flooring: Bone | Wide Plank French Oak Beam: Reclaimed Heartpine Storefront: @holycowleather

An Emphasis on Indoor/Outdoor Living In addition to embracing the Californian spirit, the homeowners envisioned a flexible space that effortlessly adapted to both daily living and entertaining, capitalizing on the unique characteristics of all four seasons that West Vancouver offers.

Concrete, the classic material of discerning architecture, is now increasingly being used indoors. Concrete surfaces have a characteristic expression that is always entirely unique. Qualities that make this timeless material so precious for the design of individual kitchens.

Stunning gray veining with fades and a characteristic pattern over a white background creates this unique quartz piece.

New Additions to Hoover + Hill This project is a continuation of the renovation and updating work Flavin Architects had previously completed at the 1958 Wales house, designed by architect Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Our clients, a young family, desired more space for guests, a home office, a yoga studio, and covered car parking. The challenge was to respect the architects’ original vision and not to interfere with the perfect cruciform plan of the house. To accomplish these goals, we converted the existing garage/workshop structure into a guest house and then designed a new, separate carport/storage building. The new carport building shares the low-slope gable of the original Hoover structure. The post and beam structure characteristic of Hoover’s design is updated through the use of galvanized steel posts and I beams. The galvanized beams cantilever to support a sheltered walkway leading from the parking to a guest house terrace defined in relationship to the three structures surrounding it. The terrace is paved in slate with a central rain garden. Wood lattice clads the carport, providing good ventilation and letting the building glow like a lantern at night. Our guest house renovation celebrates the unique structural timber ceiling of the original garage. We replaced opaque plywood trusses with a slender cable truss structurally engineered by Webb Structural Services. This cable truss allows for a view of the timber ceiling. A wall of glass facing the courtyard replaced the original garage door. A murphy bed in the rear room enables quick conversion from guest quarters to weight room.

Southern Beach Getaway in WaterColor Private Residence / WaterColor, Florida Architect: Geoff Chick & Associates Builder: Chris Clark Construction The E. F. San Juan team collaborated closely with architect Geoff Chick, builder Chris Clark, interior designer Allyson Runnels, and the homeowners to bring their design vision to reality. This included custom interior and exterior millwork, pecky cypress ceilings in various rooms of the home, different types of wall and ceiling paneling in each upstairs bedroom, custom pecky cypress barn doors and beams in the master suite, Euro-Wall doors in the living area, Weather Shield windows and doors throughout, Georgia pine porch ceilings, and Ipe porch flooring. Challenges: Allyson and the homeowners wanted each of the children’s upstairs bedrooms to have unique features, and we addressed this from a millwork perspective by producing different types of wall and ceiling paneling for each of these rooms. The homeowners also loved the look of pecky cypress and wanted to see this unique type of wood featured as a highlight throughout the home. Solution: In the main living area and kitchen, the coffered ceiling presents pecky cypress stained gray to accent the tiled wall of the kitchen. In the adjoining hallway, the pecky cypress ceiling is lightly pickled white to make a subtle contrast with the surrounding white paneled walls and trim. The master bedroom has two beautiful large pecky cypress barn doors and several large pecky cypress beams that give it a cozy, rustic yet Southern coastal feel. Off the master bedroom is a sitting/TV room featuring a pecky cypress ceiling in a stunning rectangular, concentric pattern that was expertly installed by Edgar Lara and his skilled team of finish carpenters. We also provided twelve-foot-high floor-to-ceiling Euro-Wall Systems doors in the living area that lend to the bright and airy feel of this space, as do the Weather Shield windows and doors that were used throughout the home. Finally, the porches’ rich, South Georgia pine ceilings and chatoyant Ipe floors create a warm contrast to the bright walls, columns, and railings of these comfortable outdoor spaces. The result is an overall stunning home that exhibits all the best characteristics of the WaterColor community while standing out with countless unique custom features. --- Photography by Jack Gardner

INSPIRATION: Barn wood and naturally aged wood become trendy. Instead of creating a product with recuperated barn wood, we decided to design the perfect product by using new wood that is usually rejected, to create this high-end product within a production environment. We industrially designed and developed the machine utilized to create this product. We classify the wood to make sure the features and characteristics of the product are present. We have been inspired by the beauty of the marriage between the contemporary trends and the roughness of "barn wood". We created the rough chic for the kitchen. UNIQUE PROPERTIES This product enhances the features and characteristics of wood altered by the seasons. It is textured like barn wood. The beauty of this product lies in the details of a perfectly textured wood and the authenticity of each natural characteristic cleverly revealed such as knots, cracks, spalted wood, grub holes, termite holes and/or natural splinters. This design is available in 2 different models (slab and shaker) and six different colours including natural. This product allows designers to perfectly align the rough and the chic.
