This custom barndominium-style home in Franklin, Tennessee is a study in how rustic materials and modern design can coexist beautifully. Clad in natural cedar vertical siding with a standing seam metal roof, the exterior is grounded and unpretentious, yet the moment you step inside, the level of craft becomes immediately clear. Soaring vaulted ceilings finished in tongue-and-groove pine anchor the open great room, where a chef's kitchen features custom white oak cabinetry, honed quartzite countertops, a farmhouse sink, and glass-front display cabinets with interior lighting. A sculptural brass pendant marks the social lounge, while globe pendants in brushed gold illuminate the kitchen island. Every bathroom tells its own story, from a primary suite with a freestanding soaking tub set against herringbone tile and an arched built-in niche, to a powder room wrapped floor-to-ceiling in bold graphic tile with penny-round floors. The lower level delivers an entertainment space complete with a wet bar, mirrored backsplash, and polished concrete floors. Outside, a second-floor deck with a pass-through bar window opens to sweeping views of the Tennessee countryside, the kind of detail that makes this home feel like a retreat every single day.

Our clients’ beautiful island home has a deep relationship to nature. Every room in the house is oriented toward the Lake Washington. My favorite part of the design process was seeking to create a seamless feel between indoors and out. We chose a neutral and monochromatic palette, so as to not deflect from the beauty outside. Also the interior living spaces being anchored by two massive stone fireplaces - that we decided to preserve - we incorporated both rustic and modern elements in unexpected ways that worked seamlessly. We combined unpretentious, luxurious minimalism with woodsy touches resulting in sophisticated and livable interiors.

On the exterior, the desire was to weave the home into the fabric of the community, all while paying special attention to meld the footprint of the house into a workable clean, open, and spacious interior free of clutter and saturated in natural light to meet the owner’s simple but yet tasteful lifestyle. The utilization of natural light all while bringing nature’s canvas into the spaces provides a sense of harmony. Light, shadow and texture bathe each space creating atmosphere, always changing, and blurring the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor space. Color abounds as nature paints the walls. Though they are all white hues of the spectrum, the natural light saturates and glows, all while being reflected off of the beautiful forms and surfaces. Total emersion of the senses engulf the user, greeting them with an ever changing environment. Style gives way to natural beauty and the home is neither of the past or future, rather it lives in the moment. Stable, grounded and unpretentious the home is understated yet powerful. The environment encourages exploration and an awakening of inner being dispelling convention and accepted norms. The home encourages mediation embracing principals associated with silent illumination. If there was one factor above all that guided the design it would be found in a word, truth. To the left of the entrance is the kitchen, and to its right – the living room. These two areas are visually connected to each other, to give the house a feeling of spaciousness, but each of them has its own special qualities, thus creating in each a feeling of intimacy and coziness. The small living room is partially separated by a niche, housing the television and bookshelves. Simple, eclectic furniture, a wooden floor, and two blocks of bold color - a blue door and red leather armchair - create an inviting and unpretentious atmosphere.

This Neal Huston-designed second home in Broken Top reflects its owners’ unpretentious personalities and active lifestyles. It is set apart from many of its neighboring homes by its modest size, vibrant use of color, simple but finely-wrought alder millwork and playful applications of stone and ceramic tile. The result is an eclectic mix of finishes that combine to create a very casual and welcoming space that doesn’t overpower the clients furnishings and artwork. The American Craftsman style grew in popularity at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. The style emphasized work done by hand over mass-production, keeping with a growing cultural ethos of that period. It focused on handmade, local and/or natural materials, simplicity and originality. Traditional Craftsman style homes would feature handcrafted stained or leaded glass, metalwork and wood. In 2017, the Craftsman is simplified and uncluttered but has kept its vigor for handcrafted, long-lasting elements. Unpretentious and comfortable, Craftsman homes are often low-profile, one-and-a-half stories that could be part of the landscape.

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States We helped the clients find a beautiful lot in North Boulder, then crafted this modern 3,300 s.f. house to be their dream home. The clients asked for a warm modern style home, with an open floor plan that connected to the outdoors and took full advantage of the rare lot. We sited and engineered the house for optimal passive solar design, while simultaneously capturing unobstructed panoramic views of the Flatirons from both levels. The home’s simple, clean lines reflect their unpretentious, easy-going character. The gourmet kitchen, dining and Great room are flooded with sunshine from the 9ft high ceilings and walls of glass. A gracious covered west porch flows seamlessly out from the Great room through a giant bank of sliding doors, creating a fantastic opportunity for indoor/outdoor living. The porch has solid cedar columns and Beetle-kill wood on the ceiling to create a warm feeling. On the ground floor, walk past the front hall to reach a guest suite and a rec room that is divided between a small media room for the boys and a north facing painting studio. Follow the stair to the second floor where you’ll immediately be presented with a stunning view from the open study and balcony. All the bedrooms get a south facing Flatiron view and the master has its own private balcony. The owners wanted the HERS 37 house to be as green as possible, and the house has tiny energy and water bills as well as a healthy indoor air environment. It features solar photovoltaic panels, Energy Star fiberglass windows, foam insulation, LED lights, Watersense plumbing fixtures, a 96% efficient furnace & zero-VOC finishes. The Provence collection offers French design elements in updated finishes for a relaxed take on a traditional style. Provence is inspired by the rustic styles found in the French countryside, where artisans used local woods and unpretentious finishes to recreate the styles of the grand estates in Paris. Elements of Louis Philippe and Directoire styles feature graceful curves, deep molding profiles, and antiqued hardware with Knotty Elm veneers are highlighted in rich, organic finishes with warm undertones and a slight sheen -- a medium-toned Cobblestone finish and dark, rich Espresso finish. He commissioned architect Matthew Stratton, interior designer Jennifer Corredor, builder Denis Savoie and landscape architect Craig Reynolds to create his dream home. The plan: to set the stage for his proposal to then girlfriend, Judy, and embark on a new phase of his life. Embracing a modern take on the Key West style famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses and laid-back attitude, Corredor designed a simple, elegant and unpretentious interior scheme for this 3,900-square-foot home. A tropical sensation flows freely with natural materials and a color palette that reflect the island’s backdrop of sandy beaches, brilliant skies and cresting ocean waves. Polished white-glass tile flooring downstairs contrasts with African teak wood flooring upstairs, while cherry wood paneling and custom wall treatments create texture. To the breezy blue and white theme throughout, the designer added a zest of coral, inspired by the Royal Poinciana tree that frames the arbor by the pool. “The whole idea with ocean hues and wood tones is to emulate the surroundings,” Corredor says. “I think these elements add character to a space, as well as warmth.” The great room reflects Corredor’s light airy approach.
