My clients wanted to update their master bathroom and achieve more privacy between the bathroom and bedroom. Countertop, sink and tub/shower to shower only updates were also desired. To separate, but not block light coming into the shower area, I designed a tall storage cabinet to finish the end of built-in shelving. Between the cabinet and the wall near the shower, I designed for a glass panel or art glass to be installed to provide privacy, but allow light to penetrate. The existing tub/shower was removed and a beautiful tiled shower with niche was installed. This allows my clients a near barrier-free shower. The mosaic liner (decorative) tile in the shower and niche were continued onto the vanity as a backsplash to tie the space together. The countertops were updated with Silestone Quartz. Rectangle undermount sinks in off-white to match the existing toilet were installed along with oil-rubbed bronze faucets. The flooring was also updated to define the bathroom from the bedroom. I completed this project with Thayer Construction, LLC.

The master bathroom in a traditional home in South Tulsa was recently updated to remove 1990's elements such as bathroom carpet, floral wallpaper and visible cabinet hinges. The carpet was replaced with a neutral matte tile. The shower walls were tiled with a polished version of the floor tiles. The shower was expanded by incorporating part of the tub surround as a shower bench. A frameless shower also gives an expanded look to the shower. The result is an updated a new retreat for the homeowners.

Our clients had been in their home since the early 1980’s and decided it was time for some updates. We took on the kitchen, two bathrooms and a powder room. We started first on the hall bath which was basically just in need of a face lift. The floor is porcelain tile made to look like carrera marble. The vanity is white Shaker doors fitted with a white quartz top. We re-glazed the cast iron tub. The original marble in the hall bath shower/tub was salvaged and reused. A new wall was constructed on the vanity end of the tub, and this is where the updated plumbing was installed. The wall was finished in a new tile that compliments other existing elements. Chrome corner baskets were added for convenient storage.

Photography by Jim Tetro This house, built in the 1960s, sits southfacing on a terrific wooded lot in Bethesda, Maryland. The owners desire a whole-house renovation which would improve the general building fabric and systems, and extend the sense of living out of doors in all seasons. The original sixties-modern character is preserved and the renovation extends the design forward into a contemporary, modern approach. Connections to and through the site are enhanced through the creation of new larger window and door openings. Screened porches and decks perch above the sloped and wooded site. The new kitchen and bathrooms allow for opportunities to feel out-of -doors while preparing, cooking, dining, and bathing. Smart passive strategies guide the environmental choices for this project, including envelope improvements, updated mechanical systems, and on-site stormwater management.

This bathroom was updated with classic white cabinets from Crystal Cabinets, durable Silestone quartz countertops, Mannington Adura vinyl plank flooring, and a fresh coat of blue on the walls.

Klopf Architecture and Outer space Landscape Architects designed a new warm, modern, open, indoor-outdoor home in Los Altos, California. Inspired by mid-century modern homes but looking for something completely new and custom, the owners, a couple with two children, bought an older ranch style home with the intention of replacing it. Created on a grid, the house is designed to be at rest with differentiated spaces for activities; living, playing, cooking, dining and a piano space. The low-sloping gable roof over the great room brings a grand feeling to the space. The clerestory windows at the high sloping roof make the grand space light and airy. Upon entering the house, an open atrium entry in the middle of the house provides light and nature to the great room. The Heath tile wall at the back of the atrium blocks direct view of the rear yard from the entry door for privacy. The bedrooms, bathrooms, play room and the sitting room are under flat wing-like roofs that balance on either side of the low sloping gable roof of the main space. Large sliding glass panels and pocketing glass doors foster openness to the front and back yards. In the front there is a fenced-in play space connected to the play room, creating an indoor-outdoor play space that could change in use over the years. The play room can also be closed off from the great room with a large pocketing door. In the rear, everything opens up to a deck overlooking a pool where the family can come together outdoors. Wood siding travels from exterior to interior, accentuating the indoor-outdoor nature of the house. Where the exterior siding doesn’t come inside, a palette of white oak floors, white walls, walnut cabinetry, and dark window frames ties all the spaces together to create a uniform feeling and flow throughout the house. The custom cabinetry matches the minimal joinery of the rest of the house, a trim-less, minimal appearance. Wood siding was mitered in the corners, including where siding meets the interior drywall. Wall materials were held up off the floor with a minimal reveal. This tight detailing gives a sense of cleanliness to the house. The garage door of the house is completely flush and of the same material as the garage wall, de-emphasizing the garage door and making the street presentation of the house kinder to the neighborhood. The house is akin to a custom, modern-day Eichler home in many ways. Inspired by mid-century modern homes with today’s materials, approaches, standards, and technologies. The goals were to create an indoor-outdoor home that was energy-efficient, light and flexible for young children to grow.
