These wonderful clients returned to us for their newest home remodel adventure. Their newly purchased custom built 1970s modern ranch sits in one of the loveliest neighborhoods south of the city but the current conditions of the home were out-dated and not so lovely. Upon entering the front door through the court you were greeted abruptly by a very boring staircase and an excessive number of doors. Just to the left of the double door entry was a large slider and on your right once inside the home was a soldier line up of doors. This made for an uneasy and uninviting entry that guests would quickly forget and our clients would often avoid. We also had our hands full in the kitchen. The existing space included many elements that felt out of place in a modern ranch including a rustic mountain scene backsplash, cherry cabinets with raised panel and detailed profile, and an island so massive you couldn’t pass a drink across the stone. Our design sought to address the functional pain points of the home and transform the overall aesthetic into something that felt like home for our clients. For the entry, we re-worked the front door configuration by switching from the double door to a large single door with side lights. The sliding door next to the main entry door was replaced with a large window to eliminate entry door confusion. In our re-work of the entry staircase, guesta are now greeted into the foyer which features the Coral Pendant by David Trubridge. Guests are drawn into the home by stunning views of the front range via the large floor-to-ceiling glass wall in the living room. To the left, the staircases leading down to the basement and up to the master bedroom received a massive aesthetic upgrade. The rebuilt 2nd-floor staircase has a center spine with wood rise and run appearing to float upwards towards the master suite. A slatted wall of wood separates the two staircases which brings more light into the basement stairwell. Black metal railings add a stunning contrast to the light wood. Other fabulous upgrades to this home included new wide plank flooring throughout the home, which offers both modernity and warmth. The once too-large kitchen island was downsized to create a functional focal point that is still accessible and intimate. The old dark and heavy kitchen cabinetry was replaced with sleek white cabinets, brightening up the space and elevating the aesthetic of the entire room. The kitchen countertops are marble look quartz with dramatic veining that offers an artistic feature behind the range and across all horizontal surfaces in the kitchen. As a final touch, cascading island pendants were installed which emphasize the gorgeous ceiling vault and provide warm feature lighting over the central point of the kitchen. This transformation reintroduces light and simplicity to this gorgeous home, and we are so happy that our clients can reap the benefits of this elegant and functional design for years to come.

The glass doors sit upon beautiful solid granite thresholds that cooperate with the granite vanity and makeup area tops. The cabinets are a rich Cordovan on maple with a licorice glaze. The cabinets have clean lines due to a wider rail door profile with a traditional raised panel center in a full overlay construction. His and hers tall linen and medicine cabinets left and right of the sink give plenty of storage. A makeup desk area with seven drawers and a beautiful matching granite top complete this beautiful space.

BC&J Architecture designed a floating home that is now located at its permanent location on the Willamette River in Portland. The home was constructed at a Marina an hour from the final home location. Upon completion, the home was floated up the Willamette River to the current site. The homeowners were looking for a river side, cottage style house well suited to entertaining. At 2,100 square feet, the home has an open floor plan with a large kitchen opening to a dining room and the living room with views onto the river. Upstairs, the master bedroom extends toward the river under a large centered dormer. On the opposite side of the master bedroom is a bonus room under a symmetrical dormer that will serve as guest quarters when adult children and grandchildren visit.

We transformed an awkward bowling alley into an elegant and gracious kitchen that works for a couple or a grand occasion. The high ceilings are highlighted by an exquisite and silent hood by Ventahood set on a wall of marble mosaic. The lighting helps to define the space while not impeding sight lines. The new picture window centers upon a beautiful mature tree and offers views to their outdoor fireplace. The Peninsula offers casual dining and a staging place for dessert/appetizers out of the work zone.

The glass itself proposed problems because it had a wavy texture and separate confetti glass that could be added to the bottom. Therefore, we needed to add something below it. • A custom steel base was designed to carry the weight yet float the glass so you are able to see the beauty of the glass itself. A small 1/2 inch trim piece on the steel was added to accomplish this task. • Once the steel was made, we took it to the glass distributor. We turned the very heavy base upside down, traced the 1/2 inch trim piece on a full size piece of paper, and sent it to the glass manufacturer. • After this, the base was sent to a powder coater and the raw steel was transformed into a beautiful champagne color. • In the meantime, the glass manufacturer molded a channel for the glass to rest that would suspend the glass 1/2 inch higher than the powder coated steel base. • The glass manufacturer was instructed to make the top of the glass smooth, so it would hold a plate without rocking; they added an extra layer of 1/4 inch glass after it was fired the first time to accomplish this. • When the base was brought to the job site, the carpenter installed a thick 6 inch block of wood through the tile and into the floor joists. The hollow 6 inch square base of the steel table was glued and screwed into the wood. The base was leveled and ready for the top to arrive several days later. • The glass installers put it over the base, and it fit PERFECTLY! (whew) • The steel base is 3 inches smaller than the glass, creating a see-through effect around the entire perimeter of the kidney bean shape. • The granite was then templated by using a specialized camera that measured the curve of the glass. However, upon arrival, the fit was less than perfect. Thanks to a patient and skilled granite installer from Nonn's Showplace spent several hours hand grinding and polishing the curve on site until it fit perfectly. • A small bead of silicone between the granite and the glass was all that was needed to complete the perfect installation. • With a few shims under the end of the granite, the top is perfectly level! • Our client was extremely excited and very patient with the process because they trusted our abilities so that the end result would be spectacular.

This kitchen remodel has been 27 years in the making and was ready for an all-around update. During our first few meetings, our client had envisioned what drawers would house which items and really wanted the kitchen to accommodate more people whether for a simple meal or for multiple cooks during a celebratory gathering. The original kitchen did not have enough storage and the island did not allow for much seating space. Our client dreamed of a kitchen where she could cook and entertain her family and friends at the same time. An existing wall enclosing the kitchen was removed and another wall was extended to room for a wall of cabinetry while also allowing the space for a bigger island. Upon entering the kitchen, a base cabinet with beveled glass doors showcases the beautiful china that our client has collected throughout the years. The new kitchen is packed with appliances that allow our client to make the best usage of them. A 48” American Range Lenged Series rangetop and a 48” stainless steel hood by Windster form the heart of the kitchen. A stainless steel backsplash allows easy maintenance for our client who uses the kitchen so often. The new wall now starts with a desk/office area, a 30” American Range Legacy Series double wall oven, a 36” French door refrigerator, ice maker, wine refrigerator and beverage center. A mixer stand is located in the base cabinet of the island to save countertop space and a drawer bank allows for baking utensils. A prep sink is part of the island with a single trash to make cooking, prepping and cleaning an ease for multiple cooks. A microwave drawer is also available on the island. Easy access and once again keeping the countertop work space open and free. Storage is available at the seating area for seasonal items. The kitchen finishes were completely switched out as well. The new cabinetry consists of a Cherry species in the Nantucket door style by Crystal Cabinets. Cabinets were finished in a Cinnamon stain with black glazing in a distressed look with cracking and wearing. The surrounding cabinets have a leathered granite and a marble countertop for the island. The three-part crown was inspired by an armoire that has been with the family for a long period of time. Crystal knobs and cup style pulls provide the finishing touches to this beautiful and functional kitchen.
