When Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family. The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space. The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm. Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace. Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family. Our project involved a full interior remodel and exterior restoration to modernize the infrastructure and to accommodate the needs of a young family, but with the important focus on preserving the history of this 1920s Georgian revival home. Our design included a single story kitchen addition, carefully designed to integrate with the existing exterior architectural detail of the structure, it being visible from public views. Conversely, to the rear private area of the house is an antithesis to traditional architecture, converting a little used north facing courtyard, surrounded on three sides by 2-story walls, and open to the north, into a modern glass enclosed double story “sunroom” which can be opened out to the patio beyond, making it now a fully functioning part of the house. A complete and eclectic rear garden renovation with a creative blend of formal and natural elements. Formal lawn panel and rose garden, craftsman style wood deck and trellis, homages to Goldsworthy and Stonehenge with large boulders and a large stone cairn, several water features, a Japanese Torii gate, rock walls and steps, vegetables and herbs in containers and a new parking area paved with permeable pavers that feed an underground storage area that in turns irrigates the garden. All this blends into a diverse but cohesive garden. Designed by Charles W Bowers, Built by Garden Gate Landscaping, Inc. © Garden Gate Landscaping, Inc./Charles W. Bowers

The custom, hand-blown glass cluster chandelier sets the tone for the ultra-luxurious master bathroom and helps make this lofty space feel more intimate. Notice how the framed inset tile floor area, in a herringbone pattern, mimics an area rug. I chose the oval free-standing tub to echo the curve of the bay window. Photo by Brian Gassel

The hardscape is the backbone of your home’s exterior design. Over the years your plants will bloom, die, and be replaced, but your hardscape will outlive it all. The essential hardscape features, such as your concrete, pavers, retaining walls, and walkways provide the foundation for all other aspects of your outdoor living.

Water features are wonderful way to add the elements of both sound and movement to your outdoor space. A bubbling water feature is a low maintenance option that works well in small spaces.

In recent history cricket has seen a worldwide growth in players, spectators and betting sites. The amount of people enjoying the game has reached unprecedented levels with more juniors playing the game than ever before. Behind the boom has been the introduction of 20 over cricket. The shortened format of the game has been targeted towards those that find the longer 4/5 day games too time consuming to watch. Cricket tips help the punters to place the bet on right predictions and odds. As the popularity of cricket continues to grow, so do the betting markets. One aspect of betting has seen the biggest rise however, and that is of its in-play betting market. A host of separate markets are available to bet on each game, many offering solid value for the punter. The UK’s cricket boom has mainly been as benefactor of the 2005 Ashes victory. The Ashes are arguably the pinnacle of the international season as fierce rivals England take on Australia over a 5 test series to win an urn which is only a few inches small. The urn is said to be over 100 years old and contains the ashes of the bails that were used in the first ever match between the two teams. The series was covered on terrestrial television with millions tuning in around the world and the nation coming to a complete stand still for most of the series.
