Another fun Crestview project! This young couple wanted a back yard that reflected their bohemian-eclectic style and could add additional privacy from the ever climbing construction around them. A place for “hanging out and drinking coffee or beer in the backyard.” But what was most exciting, was the air stream they had just purchased and were in the process of restoring. With the end goal of using it as a guest home for family and friends, we were challenged with creating a space that was cohesive and connected this new living space with the rest of the yard. In the front we had another quark to fix. The sidewalk from their front door to the street suddenly stopped 5 feet from the curb, making a less than inviting entry for guests. So, creating a new usable entryway with additional curb appeal was a top priority. We managed the entertainment space by using modern poured concrete pad’s as a focal. A poured concrete wall serves as a bench as well as creates a visual anchor for the patio area. To soften the hard materials, small plantings of succulents and ground cover were planted in the spaces between the pads. For a backdrop, a custom Cedar Plank wall and trellis combined to soften the vertical space and add plenty of privacy. The trellis is anchored by a Coral Vine to add interest. Cafe style lighting was strung across the area create a sense of intimacy. We also completed the fence transition, and eliminated the grass areas that were not being utilized to reduce the amount of water waste in the landscape, and replaced these areas with beneficial plantings for the wildlife. This remodel was needed in order to take a 1950's style concrete upper slab into the present day, making it a true indoor-outdoor living space, but still utilizing all of the Midcentury design aesthetics. In the 1990's someone tried to update the space by covering the concrete ledge with pavers, as well as a portion of the area that the current deck is over. Once all the pavers were removed, the black tile was placed over the old concrete ledge and then the deck was added on, to create additional usable sq footage. The old landscaping was removed and a more minimalist, midcentury aesthetic was used for the new landscaping installation.

Our client wanted a natural Rundle rock waterfall in the backyard and a Rundle flagstone patio & sitting area in the front. Our client contacted us wanting to create a relatively maintenance free yard that focuses on relaxing family time spent in the sun as opposed to yard work. We designed and built the project utilizing synthetic grass, aggregate bedding and wonderful paving stone patio with a large cedar privacy pergola as the main focal point. Lighting & concrete edging along with step stones finished off this stunning project!!

The Book Club uses a variety of materials and creatively utilizes space to transform a small backyard into an urban oasis. A low concrete wall forms a lounge space with a cantilevered IPE bench and fire pit. Large-format concrete pavers connect the lounge area to a dining and BBQ space, protected from the elements by an overhead louvered roof. When our client contacted us, they wanted to completely renovate their condo to accommodate a much better use of their space, which included a new kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and den/office. There were some limitations with placement, given this home was a condo, but some key design changes were made to dramatically improvement their home. Firstly, after demolition it was discovered that there was lots of ceiling space that was unused and empty. So we all decided to raise it by almost 2 feet - almost 4' in the bathroom and bedroom. This probably had the most dramatic impact of all the changes. Our client also decided to have polished concrete floors and this was done everywhere, and incorporate custom cabinetry in all rooms. The advantage of this was to really maximize and fully utilize every possible area, while at the same time dramatically beautify the condo. Of course the brushed brass finishes and minimal decorating help direct the to key focal places in the condo including the mural of wallpaper in the bathroom and entertainment in the living room. We love the Pentax backsplash in the kitchen!
