After many years in their home, the Ellyson’s dreamt of a new landscape design that would complement and enhance their Cape Cod style home. A more intimate atmosphere was desired, which their spacious yard lent to many ideas. “I like to incorporate groupings of plants, whether it is five or fifteen, for dramatic effect and the greatest impact,” Van Elders spoke of his plant choices and design. “In this case, we had to be especially selective in the plant choices as most plants favor either full sun or full shade, or partial sun or shade. “The design called for the creation of an intimate courtyard using a twenty-four inch high design feature wall, which partially encloses the entry. To enhance a clean aesthetic, we customized the cabinet boxes to avoid any distracting seams, common with inset kitchens. But at the same time, we used decorative feet on the end cabinets and bead board accents to achieve that furniture look common in historic farmhouses. Additional nods to the farmhouse schematic include mullion glass doors, an apron front sink, beveled subway tile, turn latch knobs and bin pulls all in oiled rubbed bronze and a magnificent mushroom wood and copper custom hood.

A Lake Michigan Home gets a Modern Refresh from Dresner Design. Photos by Tony Soluri. This couple moved from Chicago’s Wicker Park to a rural setting but wanted to maintain their modern aesthetic. Scott Dresner of Dresner Design created a light bright clean-lined kitchen perfect for the couple’s need to entertain. Must have’s included a drawer for over sixty spices, storage for three sets of dishes, a coffee bar, and a huge island the couple uses for entertaining. The palette is mostly white to maximize outdoor views. Constraints were plenty both timeline and budgetary. Dresner came up with some creative solutions, which allowed the homeowners to save on cabinetry and materials and splurge on appliances.

Clean and elegant, the design maximizes storage yet avoids losing its airy simplicity. Every detail is thoughtfully considered from the u-shaped drawers in the sink base to transitioning the peninsula into a buffet (with ample storage) as it wraps into the dining room. The perfect symmetry in all the cabinet runs is playfully reflected in the magnificent herringbone floors.

A unique contemporary wool and silk rug brings depth and picks up on the gold-tone and metal accessories. A blend of finishes - shiny, matte, metal, furry - adds layers of interest.
