Challenging the local San Francisco vernacular with powerful contemporary style, this new apartment building designed by Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) plays with viewer perception to create dramatic visual and spatial effects. Linden Street, a back alley to Hayes Valley’s boutique San Francisco mixed-use commercial and residential district, incorporates an eclectic group of traditional one- to four-story Victorian and Edwardian houses. Adapting local vernacular with contemporary sensibility, this design maximizes building area on a minimal lot with expansive circulation spaces connecting street life clear through to rear rooftop open spaces. By creatively interpreting local zoning codes (bay window, awning, cornice, and balcony) Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) generated a unified building facade with unique optic and haptic spatial characteristics. The owner of this urban residence, which exhibits many natural materials, i.e., exposed brick and stucco interior walls, originally signed a contract to update two of his bathrooms. But, after the design and material phase began in earnest, he opted to removed the second bathroom from the project and focus entirely on the Master Bath. And, what a marvelous outcome! With the new design, two full­height walls were removed (one completely and the second lowered to knee­wall height) allowing the eye to sweep the entire space as one enters. The views, no longer hindered by walls, have been completely enhanced by the materials chosen. The limestone counter and tub deck are mated with the Rift­cut Oak, Espresso stained, custom cabinets and panels. Cabinetry, within the extended design, that appears to float in space, is highlighted by the under­cabinet LED lighting, creating glowing warmth that spills across the butter­colored floor. Stacked stone wall and splash tiles are balanced perfectly with the honed travertine floor tiles; floor tiles installed with a linear stagger, again, pulling the viewer into the restful space. The lighting, introduced, appropriately, in several layers, includes ambient, task (sconces installed through the mirroring), and “sparkle” (under­cabinet LED and mirror­frame LED). The final detail that marries this beautifully remodeled bathroom was the removal of the entry slab hinged door and in the installation of the new custom five glass panel pocket door. This photorealistic 3D render showcases a modern and cozy bedroom, designed to highlight space usage, natural lighting, and textures in a coastal-inspired style. We customized a full home theater with a digital projector, built-in surround sound, and a large projector screen. We built up the second tier so the second level viewers would not be impacted by the spectators in front – much like a public movie theater. The seating is electric and reclinable for optimal comfort. This is the ultimate movie and spectator experience. It is easy to say this trumps a public movie theater in comfort, sound quality, and visual quality.

A relaxed yet truly elegant room that is welcoming with it's light and breezy transitional style. This french styled transitional room has elements of today's lifestyle while incorporating those wonderful and meticulous traditional details. Shown is the decorative quatrefoil ceiling pattern, fully custom fireplace design, and beautifully detailed windows with a lovely view of the gardens. The architecture gives the viewer a nod to the "transitional" French Country & Beax-Arts style with it's decorative ceiling but also a restrained design of the fireplace which allows the room to show all of its assets. Not one detail overpowers the other. The furniture has a relaxed and a contemporary feel. A rustic farm table with ornate lanterns make the mood of the room, casual yet elegant.
