This client's home backs up to a beautiful native Beech and Tulip woodland with an intermittent stream running through the middle of the site. After mistakenly over-clearing the natural forest saplings, the once lush woods was now bare. Called in to help re-vegetate the woodland, we designed and created a new path network through the woodland so that the client could enjoy and experience their new garden. Planted with large masses of native perennials, shade grasses and spring bulbs this back yard is now lush once again.

Striking a balance between woodland path and polished, public urban space was a real challenge. The finished product is a very welcoming and inviting space that leaves passers by wanting to see what's going on past the plantings while giving the homeowners some privacy and screening from people on the street and sidewalk.

Immediately after installation the plantings look somewhat sparse to the untrained eye. Entirely by design, plants grow and we need to allow adequate space for them to mature. Accents of bluestone outcropping rock create a subtle and graceful grade change. Random bluestone flags communicate between the public walk and the Unilock paver patio.

Sugar Maples on the parkway and a mature Larch provide a dramatic canopy for this urban garden. Landscaping under mature trees creates a special challenge, dry shade limits the pallet of useful plants.

'Diamond' fountain by Stone Forest is a dramatic sculptural piece contributing moving water and creating a sense of calm and serenity to this patio of Unilock 'Brussels' pavers. Blue stone flags and outcropping connect the patio to the public walk on this busy side street in Wheaton. Plantings include Heuchera 'Plum Pudding' and Variegated Lilly turf (Liriope spicata 'Silver scepter')
