Inspiration for a contemporary u-shaped dark wood floor eat-in kitchen remodel in Atlanta with an undermount sink, flat-panel cabinets, dark wood cabinets, multicolored backsplash, stainless steel appliances, white walls, a peninsula and marble countertops

This renovation project of a 1920s home included a kitchen, bar/mudroom, laundry room, guest bathroom and primary bathroom. This home, located in the Virginia Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, had an unusual layout and a good bit of unused space. The two main goals were to bring the outdated spaces to suit modern living standards, and to better utilize the space.

This 1960s Ranch was taken from it's original red/yellow brick and painted a light grey tan color. I added a new roof and the red/maroon bleached out shutters were changed out for stained board and batten shutters. I also added a new garage door with accent pieces, exterior lighting was changed out and I extended the original front porch out by an additional 4 feet making it a true sitting porch. We also put in a tree swing in front to show the tranquility of the home and neighborhood and give the home a new young feel since the neighborhood was becoming a new hub for first time buyers with children. The front door is on the side of the house that sits well off the road. The towering stone face chimney is a strong design feature to the front of the house. A detached two-car garage and separate work shed make up the "farm" property.

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.
