The existing house was designed by one of our architecture professors who recently passed away. It was a labor of great love and an in-depth exploration of his ideas – manifested in heavy-gauge steel and corrugated metal…seemingly modern and yet beautifully vernacular and simple … a vertical shotgun house.
The exterior of the existing house was beautiful as it was; we only cleaned it up and gave it a polish. A new entry sequence with a new ramp and rear patio ties the house to its exterior surroundings. Our colleagues, David Keiffer and Michael Nius, worked on the exterior portion of this project.
As the original house was a labor of love, so too was the renovation and completion of the house as a residence for the School's visiting faculty.

The design challenge was to enhance the square footage, flow and livability in this 1,442 sf 1930’s Tudor style brick house for a growing family of four. A two story 1,000 sf addition was the solution proposed by the design team at Advance Design Studio, Ltd. The new addition provided enough space to add a new kitchen and eating area with a butler pantry, a food pantry, a powder room and a mud room on the lower level, and a new master suite on the upper level.
The family envisioned a bright and airy white classically styled kitchen accented with espresso in keeping with the 1930’s style architecture of the home. Subway tile and timely glass accents add to the classic charm of the crisp white craftsman style cabinetry and sparkling chrome accents. Clean lines in the white farmhouse sink and the handsome bridge faucet in polished nickel make a vintage statement. River white granite on the generous new island makes for a fantastic gathering place for family and friends and gives ample casual seating. Dark stained oak floors extend to the new butler’s pantry and powder room, and throughout the first floor making a cohesive statement throughout. Classic arched doorways were added to showcase the home’s period details.
On the upper level, the newly expanded garage space nestles below an expansive new master suite complete with a spectacular bath retreat and closet space and an impressively vaulted ceiling. The soothing master getaway is bathed in soft gray tones with painted cabinets and amazing “fantasy” granite that reminds one of beach vacations. The floor mimics a wood feel underfoot with a gray textured porcelain tile and the spacious glass shower boasts delicate glass accents and a basket weave tile floor. Sparkling fixtures rest like fine jewelry completing the space.
The vaulted ceiling throughout the master suite lends to the spacious feel as does the archway leading to the expansive master closet. An elegant bank of 6 windows floats above the bed, bathing the space in light.

This South Texas ranch home utilizes the flexibility of separate building volumes and a vast, open site to create the ideal country retreat. The arrangement of the three simple volumes recalls and reinterprets the historic building forms of the Texas plains, while meeting the clients’ programmatic requests for highly efficient spaces, both public and private. The dogrun pavilion, which connects the Great Room and Master Suite beneath a delicate steel-truss roof, provides the perfect place to gather in the shade, entertain guests, and pick up the comfortable southeast breezes. With this sensitive approach, the result is not just a collection of structures, but an integrated dwelling awaiting a comfortable Texas lifestyle.

The double volume entrance hall is framed by a back-lit perforated skin of scaffolding boards bolted to a wall, creating the perfect backdrop for the sculptural looking concrete staircase with steel inlays.

The project takes the form of an architectural cast-in-place concrete base upon which a floating sheet steel clad open-ended volume and an 8-4-16 masonry volume are situated. This CMU has a sandblasted finish in order to expose the warmth of the local Salt River aggregate that comprises this material.

This stunning exterior of stone and brick elegantly blends with a metal roof and trio of dormers for an exciting façade in this Old World-flavored house plan. The interior mirrors the lavish exterior in this one-story home plan.
Nothing short of grandiose, the master suite features a private sitting area, rear porch, tray ceiling and two walk-in closets.
Ceiling treatments in this house plan highlight the sunroom, great room and dining room, granting volume and architectural detail to each. The secondary bedrooms are positioned for privacy and share a full bath. A generous utility room provides plenty of space for laundry and household chores.
For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the rear porch can be accessed through both the great room and sunroom, and is crowned with a cathedral ceiling for added volume.

The original attic had wood paneling on the walls and ceiling and was mostly used for storage and as a retreat for the cats. The 7-foot walls did not capture the volume of the roof line, nor did it take advantage of the square footage. We removed the existing paneling and pushed the existing walls back so they had a lower height around the perimeter. This provides a dramatic contrast to the new high ceiling and dramatic angles of the roofline. We maintained an open floor plan and used glass panels and doors for privacy and separation of different functions. The finished square footage is 650 sq.ft. There is about 350 sq.ft. of unfinished the storage area.
The space needed some detailing to balance the large volume. The open plan also required a visual delineation of the different areas. Our designer added three beams across the ceiling over the bed to define the master bedroom. The beams were finished with the same dark stain used to refinish the attic’s original pine flooring. Dimmable recessed lights in the ceiling are placed in accordance with the beams location.
There are two good-size closets for the owners in the eaves, and additional storage, as well as the HVAC system is also located in the eaves and access through two doors—one next to the bed and one in the bathroom.
