The goal was to create a stylish sanctuary in your own backyard! This reasoning spurred the inspiration for the backyard restyle at Project GC, which saw Ariel and Robert furnishing and styling their outdoor space on a budget so they could take advantage of the weather and spend more time outside while renovating the inside of their home.
Our goal was to design with the great outdoors in mind by selecting furnishings that could withstand the weather and could remain outside throughout the seasons.
We wanted to be budget conscious and therefor choose everything from Target.
We intentionally chose furniture that was Target to meet our budget constraints but we also wanted to show that if you can only shop from one store, you can mix and match what they have to offer to create a one of a kind space.
The natural whicker table and chairs are durable, lightweight and create a relaxed tropical vibe.
The table is anchored to a black and white rug while providing a touch of modernism. Tropical plants were layered into the space in a variety of pots of different scales and textures.
Colored was infused into the space with throw pillows and blankets that can easily be changed out to match the season.
Finally, we created mood lighting with strung lights and lanterns of different scales that could remain outside. Voila – an outdoor space we could relax in!

Here is how you can transform your basement into a rustic western saloon:
The Bar:
Reclaimed Wood: Opt for a bar built with reclaimed wood for a truly rustic look. The wood will have natural imperfections and a weathered finish that exudes a Wild West charm. You can go for a classic straight bar design or a U-shaped one to create a more intimate space.
Stone Accents: To add a touch of sophistication, consider incorporating a stone slab for the bar top. Look for natural stones like granite or soapstone with earthy tones that complement the reclaimed wood.
Metal Accents: Wrought iron or hammered copper add a touch of western flair. You can use these materials for the bar footrest, cabinet hardware, or even light fixtures.
Seating and Tables:
Bar stools: Choose bar stools with leather seats and weathered wood frames. Look for details like nailhead trim or fringe accents to tie into the western theme.
High-top tables: A couple of high-top tables with a similar rustic aesthetic can provide additional seating and space for playing cards or board games.
Flooring and Walls:
Wood Floors: Reclaimed or distressed wood flooring throughout the basement will continue the rustic feel.
Stone Tiles: Alternatively, for high-traffic areas, consider stone tiles that resemble natural flagstone or slate.
Lighting and Ambiance:
Warm Lighting: Aim for warm and inviting lighting. Wall-mounted sconces with iron fixtures will create a soft, diffused glow.
Western Decor: Spruce up the space with western-themed décor. Wild west artwork or wall hangings, vintage cowboy photographs, or wagon wheel chandeliers all add a touch of personality.
Rugs: Area rugs with southwestern patterns or Native American designs can add pops of color and texture to the space.
Don't forget the details:
Barware: Invest in a rustic barware set. Look for glasses and mugs made from thick, colored glass or mason jars.
Entertainment: A pool table or a dartboard or shuffleboard table can provide guests with some entertainment.
With these ideas, you can create a unique rustic vibe and inviting western-style home bar in your basement, perfect for entertaining friends and family.

Taragano Design & Build constructing a two story rear addition in
San Francisco, California.
The sheathing across the entire rear elevation is doing structural
work, not just closing the building in. On a narrow lot with
neighbors on both sides, the rear and front walls are the only
surfaces available to resist lateral load, since the side walls sit
tight to the property lines. Panel layout and nailing pattern come
straight off the structural drawings and get inspected before
anything covers them.
The roof went on before the windows. On a project where weather
protection matters and the interior below is already framed, the
membrane is the first priority once the deck is on. Openings can
stay covered temporarily. A structure without a roof cannot.
Access is the constraint that shapes the schedule here. Everything
reaching this yard comes through the house or over a fence, so
material deliveries are sequenced rather than stockpiled, and
debris leaves the same way it came in.

On nice days, the homeowners can now enjoy the Asheville atmosphere from inside, with a new set of Phantom Screens that slide out of sight when not in use.
The crew also expanded the homeowners’ laundry room, adding in a sink, new cabinetry, custom countertops and backsplash and a laundry rod. More practical renovations to the home included an improvement of the home’s energy efficiency and comfort by replacing and upgrading insulation, ventilation baffles, air sealing penetrations and replacing worn weather stripping.

We totally transformed this master bedroom with new flooring, feature wallpaper behind the headboard, new wall color on the other walls. All new furniture was purchased to create a nice sitting area at the end of the bed. The last part of the project to be completed was the built in feature wall. This started with the built in lower cabinetry with leather granite tops. Then the electric fireplace wall was built out to the depth of the cabinetry and covered in reclaimed wood. We used white weathered wood horizontally and the brown weathered wood on the corners. The floating shelves balance out the space with accessories

Add warmth, texture, color and character by creating your own coordinating wall art. Determine your color scheme and find the perfect fabric. For this I used an outdoor waverly fabric. The room has a traditional fireplace with warm tones, but the rest of the home is filled with neutral and cool tones, so I needed to bridge the gap to create a cohesive feeling to the entire home. I couldn't find just the right piece, so I created my own. With only one empty wall in the living/great room I needed the piece the inform the whole room, create a focal point and set the color scheme. After selecting the right fabric, I stretched it like a canvas with a varied pattern to create charm and character and then used reclaimed wood stained with miniwax's 2 fairly new stain colors - wood grey and weathered oak. After cutting out the frame staining and assembling I gave it a quick polyurethane spray. I added some beautiful almost tropical plant accents and decided to go very simple on pillows adding only 2 small botanicals to create a large seating area to create the sense of invitation. Greek key ottomans in emerald green, a patterned linen chair and quatrefoil chair created a consistence color scheme and just enough interest. To finish the look a rustic industrial coffee table and coordinating nesting tables to anchor the room, vintage books, succulents, jute detailed candles, red lanterns, a bicycle trunk for a touch of whimsy and a canvas framed with the same reclaimed wood to tie in the two art pieces. The result is the look I always strive for - the collected home. A touch of traditional, vintage treasures, botanical accents and one of a kind signature pieces. The only category that fits it all is eclectic, but I like to think that eclectic is another way of saying that the room has a designer touch and a sense of having an auteur at work. I welcome your comments. /Abi/ Charles Hoffman: photo credit / Wolverton Homes: Builder / Kerri O'Hara: TreVa Group Real Estate

The Marengo area rug in Noir features a uniquely weathered look that's perfect for casual design motifs. Hand-hooked in a pure wool fiber the wrought-iron geometric pattern is only enhanced by the neutral-toned background. This piece adds a touch of sophistication in an otherwise relaxed room and it easily becomes a statement piece thanks to its bold contrast.

If a crisp, modern step up in outdoor fashion feels right, our Chad Outdoor Pillow has a super-clean, condensed geometric design that pops. The black-and-white coloring in the positive-negative dash pattern is hand-hooked, for a little rich texture, too (unusual in an outdoor style). Pair it with solid cushions, but don’t be afraid to mix it with a complementing pattern for a look that’s more fun and eclectic. This handmade style’s cover is hand-hooked of polyester and acrylic yarns, with a polyester insert, so it’s made for all weather; dries in just 24 hours if the rain catches up to it. Cover is removable and easy to care for; just spot clean with mild soap when necessary.
