View from the pool toward the shades: The patio at this private residence in Mahwah NJ faces west, and during the summer months, the heat and glare from the sun is overwhelming; making this beautiful outdoor retreat unbearable. Motorized exterior solar shades were installed on the fascia of the overhang to reduce the harmful effects of the sun. The goals were to create a comfortable living space, reduce the glare, heat and UV, and reduce flying insects and inclement weather when in use. A Charcoal colored fabric was chosen for this roller shade as retaining the view was one of the priorities. The shade cloth selected blocks 95% of glare, but still allows the an unobstructed view of the pool for safety, and keeps the views of the Ramapo River and beautifully landscaped property. The amount of coverage and openness of the fabric drastically reduces insects and inclement weather, and cable guide rails were chosen to keep the shade fabric from billowing in the wind. Due to their small footprint, cable guides are more aesthetically pleasing versus aluminum rails, zip rails or concealed edge options which were available, but not selected for this application. The Somfy motorization allows for push-button operation, and was also tied into an existing smart-home automation system which allows the client to control the product remotely. An added benefit of this automation feature allows the client to save on cooling related air conditioning costs. The combination of 95% UV blockage and dark colored fabric gives these exterior solar shades an 87% Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, meaning that these solar screen shades will dramatically reduce the amount of UV and heat penetrating the windows of the home.

The Marengo area rug in Noir features a uniquely weathered look that's perfect for casual design motifs. Hand-hooked in a pure wool fiber the wrought-iron geometric pattern is only enhanced by the neutral-toned background. This piece adds a touch of sophistication in an otherwise relaxed room and it easily becomes a statement piece thanks to its bold contrast.

The goal was to create a stylish sanctuary in your own backyard! This reasoning spurred the inspiration for the backyard restyle at Project GC, which saw Ariel and Robert furnishing and styling their outdoor space on a budget so they could take advantage of the weather and spend more time outside while renovating the inside of their home.
Our goal was to design with the great outdoors in mind by selecting furnishings that could withstand the weather and could remain outside throughout the seasons.
We wanted to be budget conscious and therefor choose everything from Target.
We intentionally chose furniture that was Target to meet our budget constraints but we also wanted to show that if you can only shop from one store, you can mix and match what they have to offer to create a one of a kind space.
The natural whicker table and chairs are durable, lightweight and create a relaxed tropical vibe.
The table is anchored to a black and white rug while providing a touch of modernism. Tropical plants were layered into the space in a variety of pots of different scales and textures.
Colored was infused into the space with throw pillows and blankets that can easily be changed out to match the season.
Finally, we created mood lighting with strung lights and lanterns of different scales that could remain outside. Voila – an outdoor space we could relax in!

Here is how you can transform your basement into a rustic western saloon:
The Bar:
Reclaimed Wood: Opt for a bar built with reclaimed wood for a truly rustic look. The wood will have natural imperfections and a weathered finish that exudes a Wild West charm. You can go for a classic straight bar design or a U-shaped one to create a more intimate space.
Stone Accents: To add a touch of sophistication, consider incorporating a stone slab for the bar top. Look for natural stones like granite or soapstone with earthy tones that complement the reclaimed wood.
Metal Accents: Wrought iron or hammered copper add a touch of western flair. You can use these materials for the bar footrest, cabinet hardware, or even light fixtures.
Seating and Tables:
Bar stools: Choose bar stools with leather seats and weathered wood frames. Look for details like nailhead trim or fringe accents to tie into the western theme.
High-top tables: A couple of high-top tables with a similar rustic aesthetic can provide additional seating and space for playing cards or board games.
Flooring and Walls:
Wood Floors: Reclaimed or distressed wood flooring throughout the basement will continue the rustic feel.
Stone Tiles: Alternatively, for high-traffic areas, consider stone tiles that resemble natural flagstone or slate.
Lighting and Ambiance:
Warm Lighting: Aim for warm and inviting lighting. Wall-mounted sconces with iron fixtures will create a soft, diffused glow.
Western Decor: Spruce up the space with western-themed décor. Wild west artwork or wall hangings, vintage cowboy photographs, or wagon wheel chandeliers all add a touch of personality.
Rugs: Area rugs with southwestern patterns or Native American designs can add pops of color and texture to the space.
Don't forget the details:
Barware: Invest in a rustic barware set. Look for glasses and mugs made from thick, colored glass or mason jars.
Entertainment: A pool table or a dartboard or shuffleboard table can provide guests with some entertainment.
With these ideas, you can create a unique rustic vibe and inviting western-style home bar in your basement, perfect for entertaining friends and family.

Today, almost any activity you enjoy inside your home you can bring to the outside. Depending on your budget, your outdoor room can be simple, with a stamped concrete patio, a grill and a table for dining, or more elaborate with a fully functional outdoor kitchen complete with concrete countertops for preparing and serving food, a sink and a refrigerator. You can take the concept even further by adding such amenities as a concrete pizza oven, a fireplace or fire-pit, a concrete bar-top for serving cocktails, an architectural concrete fountain, landscape lighting and concrete statuary.
Cooking
Something to cook with, such as a barbecue grill or wood-fired pizza oven, and countertops for food preparation and serving are key elements in a well-designed outdoor kitchen. Concrete countertops offer the advantages of weather resistance and versatility, since they can be formed into any shape you desire to suit the space. A coat of sealer will simplify cleanup by protecting your countertop from stains. Other amenities, such as concrete bar-tops and outdoor sinks with plumbing, can expand your entertainment options.
Hearth
Wood-burning or gas fireplaces, fire pits, chimineas and portable patio heaters extend the enjoyment of outdoor living well into the evening while creating a cozy conversation area for people to gather around.
