To match the sloped roof and sharp angles on their home, Kathleen and Mark chose a 10’x12’ Premier Pro Lean-To. They added two 61”x10” transom windows on the front wall and one unique 4’ trapezoid transom window on the sidewall. The cedar siding on the Lean-To blends with the home as well, and the Benafel’s plan to treat and stain the siding to match the exterior of the home when the Portland weather cooperates. A metal roof perfectly matching their home’s roof was the cherry on top of an already awesome building. The new storage shed turned out to be exactly what they were looking for, even down to the alignment of the doors. Kathleen is more than pleased with the attention to detail on her new shed, “The installation crew was wonderful, matching the lines in the cedar siding with the doors and walls for a continuous pattern. To have that level of care was great.” They removed the fence in their yard to accommodate more landscaping projects. Neighbors using the nearby bike trail now have a clear view of the new storage shed. “We’re the talk of the neighborhood,” says Kathleen, “Everyone wants to know what that building is and what we’re using it for. We’ve gotten quite a few wild guesses from the neighbors, but really, it’s just a storage shed.”

The wainscoting and cabinets are made from reclaimed white barn board. For this special job, no wood was joined, every edge was eased to look worn with a wavering block plane. Knots, bullet holes, gouges, old paint, saw marks and every other imperfection were embraced and showcased for the story they represented. Nothing looks new. The ceiling is treated with tongue and grooved, beveled cedar planks. There is nothing more incongruous than when a room is rustic but the sheetrock walls are left smooth - especially when the wall are left white. Sometimes great ideas are simple in concept and harder to transform into reality. The construction of this railing began with the scavenging of several riverbanks and lake shores for driftwood of many shapes including several long straight pieces. Then came the selection of the right piece for the right spot. The top of the newel post looks like a beaver just gnawed it. The railing was a real jigsaw puzzle. Joining it all into a sturdy handrail system that the inspector would approve of, was a combination of good carpentry skills, fast setting epoxy, and artistic luck. The resulting handrail wowed the homeowners and their friends. It sets the mood for a Colorado ski lodge getaway every time they descend the stairs. From this angle one sees the central landscaped garden bounded by a structurally-glazed curtain wall system which provides unobstructed views to it from circulation space; corridors are located around this garden. Large sapele mahogany picture windows upstairs take advantage of expansive views and matching lift/roll doors below open to the patio. The facade is finished in custom-profile western red cedar siding treated with a bleaching oil that lightens its color and evens out changes from weathering. Walls facing the courtyard garden are clad in white GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) panels. The terrace flooring is flamed bluestone, and the fire pit is fabricated of stainless steel and bluestone.
