common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), also called annual ragweed or bitterweed. This noxious weed is much smaller, growing to between two and four feet tall. This species of ragweed is very aggressive and will grow in sunnier spots than its larger cousin, Giant Ragweed. It can often invade Bermuda lawns where the soil is compacted and irrigation may be sparse. Fall and winter are prime-time for weeds in Texas. Henbit (Lamium amplexcaule) is a prolific winter-grower. It prefers cool, moist soil so now is a perfect time for it to thrive. Henbit also loves freshly seeded lawns that are not fully grown in and dormant lawns as well. You’ll recognize it by its upright, spreading growth habit, furry lower leaves and tiny purple flowers in early spring.
