Douglas Reid Renovations

In August 2012, we bought the only double unit in a 35-year-old condo building. The 2300 square foot apartment had not been upgraded in many years so we decided on a total gut and renovation. We initially hired a contractor whose vision did not match our own and so, with the demolition half done, we hired Douglas Reid to take over the job. The neighbours across the street from our old house used DR and we liked what we saw there. We were impressed that DR had an architect/designer on staff. We worked closely with him to develop our vision into reality. We had ideas but it was really with his help that everything came together. I was heavily involved in the design aspect of the unit, including converting the small kitchen and den into one great room (20’ x 26’) with a 9’ x 6’ island (see photo). This required many choices yet the architect/designer NEVER once tried to impose his style upon us and had amazing ideas for sourcing materials, at reasonable cost. Almost all of our choices came from suppliers he recommended to us. My husband dealt mainly with the mechanical and structural issues, including installing new windows, replacing the HVAC units with something more modern, designing the kitchen pantries around an immoveable fuse box, sealing off the second entrance to the unit to create a bigger kitchen, etc. DR brought in excellent sub-trades to work on these complex issues and we were very pleased with their innovative approaches as well as their choice of equipment. The work crews were polite, good at communicating and extremely competent at their crafts. They never hesitated to contact us if they had questions or concerns. Everyone from the project manager, the site manager, down to the general labourers, was respectful AND they cleaned up the site every day. The quality of their workmanship and their attention to detail meant that we are extremely happy with the result.

It is very difficult to write a review of Douglas Reid. We have had Chad, Gavin and their exceptional team help us with every aspect of our home for years! From major projects like renovating a bathroom or kitchen to other tasks like creating a home theatre or assisting with the replacement of our windows and roof, there is no task with which we would not trust them. It is because of that trust that we continue to use them for everything that we need and everything that they do!! They treat our home like it is theirs!! Careful, concerned and committed to the highest quality. Chad provided accurate information for pricing and represented the client's interests well. While everything else went as planned, a large slab door that we had clad with Muntz was damaged during transport at a critical time for the completion of the job. Chad didn't panic, and did his part in expediting the transport back to our facilities to have it re-done. Payments were made promptly.

These guys are the best. Professional, fair, meticulous, dependable, easy to work with, extremely knowledgeable, and they do great work. They redid our basement (typical gut job and then redid plumbing, electrical, HVAC, built a bathroom and playroom), built us a modern carport, and did backyard landscaping. Without question, we will be using them again.

As realtors project managing reno & structural work on a luxury investment property for an overseas client, we had a very technical job with some specific needs. Douglas Reid were more than up to the job: they were skilled enough to work alongside the structural engineer, independent enough to work unsupervised and not drag the job on, respectful & professional enough to handle the interpersonal politics of high end tenants and busy professional clients (don't underestimate how rare this is!) and they wrapped up the job so it was like they were never there. What more can you ask for? As busy realtors we get asked for house-related recommendations all the time; we only pass on the very best, since we know what they do will reflect on us too.
