Every house we design should feel like it could only belong to the people who live in it, and could only sit on the piece of ground it sits on. That is what we mean by unique yet inevitable. Once it is built, it looks like the obvious answer. Getting there is the work. The process is consistent even though the outcomes never are. We start with three things: what you want your life to look like, what your site is doing (the slope, the trees, the light, the neighbors, the rules), and the practical program you need to fit. Then we run all of it through the four principles that have shaped our work for nearly three decades: functionalism, expressionism, regionalism, and minimalism. Function first. Let the odd requirements show rather than hiding them. Build with what makes sense in Central Texas. Take away everything that isn't earning its place. Webber + Studio was founded in Austin in 1997 by David Webber, AIA. Today the studio is led by David with Thomas Tornbjerg, Managing Principal of Residential Architecture, and Stefan Bader, Director of Operations. The team designs custom homes, additions and remodels, and select multifamily and hospitality work across Austin, the Hill Country, and increasingly elsewhere in Texas. We stay on the project through construction. The architects who develop the design produce the construction drawings and are on site through completion, so decisions made at the drafting table are the same ones checked in the field. Builders tell us our sets are unusually complete, which is why our clients see fewer surprises in bidding and fewer change orders on site. Our work has been recognized with AIA Design Awards and a SARA National Design Award, and has been published in Architectural Record, Luxe, and Texas Architect.
