We now live in our cottage/home on the lake since retiring and love it, as we are actually part of a wee little village. When we lived in the big city and had to return from the cottage on Sundays, I always felt.....sigh, one day I want to live here and never have to leave. We had the cottage undergo a big renovation while we were away for 6 months and now it is where we love to live, where our family and friends love to visit........... our cottage/home and will stay as long as we can.

bungalowmo...house was a disaster when I finally moved back in. They just dumped my furnishings and left. Took me over a month to clean off the brown grime (they called movie magic) they smeared everywhere. I'm still missing things. Never again. Anxious to see my house up in lights though!

Love our cottage by the river! It's quirky...and a wonderful place to live! We lived in a " regular." colonial when kids growing up, but sooooo glad we made this move....even with all it's idiosyncrasies :)

When we had all the kids at home - no - getting away from each other sometimes, especially with teenagers, was essential. to maintain sanity. Now with one late launcher and us on our small acreage our cottage is perfect. Easy to clean, maintain and utility costs are way less.

Definitely a decision you want to do early on into retirement, if you can and while you are healthy and can still drive.

Craftsman's cottages are on the small side but they have a lot of character. Living in a small space can teach you to do more with less.

Remodel Works Bath & Kitchen...my 1930 bungalow (pictured above) was almost 1600 sq. ft., I had 4 bedrooms and they were huge as were the l/rm, d/rm and kitchen. Downside was it had 1 1/2 baths, but it's charm sure made up for that.

I hear ya backalibags! My Craftsman is approx 1260 sq ft & has 2 decent size bedrooms, an office, large LR & DR & a decent sized kitchen, 1 full bath & a toilet & shower in the basement. Since it's just me, that's all I need!

The deal breaker was the 10' deep x 25' long porch!

Misty morning in the Catskill Mountains... was our weekend home when we lived in NYC. Now we are here six months out of the year. It always looks like a doll house to me when the hydrangeas are in full bloom.

Our previous long-term home was more of a cottage. It was down a 200 foot winding driveway, on 40 acres of wooded property with two ponds and one stream. We had stone walls defining the perimeter of the yard, and at the driveway. I liked it, but I would have preferred a one story home, as that is what I have now. Love the cottage in the first picture!

Thank you Brigitte in the Netherlands! Where abouts? We had our cottage redone and so it was renovated around the existing old structure but with new roof line, bump out window with eye brow and a 6 ft addition added to the side. So the design was inspired from various ideas I researched from Houzz and adapted to the old structure. We are so happy here. Thank you for the compliment.

I'm currently in a cottage: approximately 900 sqft, just me and the dog, but with a 2nd bedroom/study for visitors. Love the compact size--plus it gives me even more yard with the .25 acre lot. May be catching, as now my daughter wants to build a tiny home (on a trailer) in my big backyard :-)

We found our 1930's stone cottage when relocating to San Antonio...we love the house and the location, close to the city but feels like living in the country! We are minutes from all the best of San Antonio - restaurants, shopping, and attractions. Here's our before and during our changes....if anyone is interested I'll post our full after tomorrow (realized we haven't taken a photo!)

We do love it, downsized and now its a bit like a little holiday everyday..it's only 20 minutes from a city where I work as an accountant..I can get home and go for a kayak or a pontoon cruise and then a glass of wine in the hot tub before bed. Have morning coffee on the dock and watch the ducks and osprey ( they are amazing they dive under and catch fish in their talons and fly off with the shocked fish getting a short lived sky high tour).
