I'd just want something I didn't have to climb up and clean. How about a wall mural? You might want to extend the visual below the cabinets too - a real WOW factor and no climbing to clean!

ok, I read some of the posts, but not all. Is that side of the room an outside wall? If so, maybe a triangular window to let in more light and could also become somewhat of a focal point of the room :)

What about adding some character to your ceiling with beams? They do have faux beams that look real and don't appear to be too much of a hassle to hang.

I would choose a beautiful Carrera marble for a back splash to pull together the white cabinets and the black countertops...and then just continue the marble up the wall into that area to create a gorgeous feature wall. Not the most inexpensive option..but would a real showstopper! You can see this idea at Dresner Design- Chicago Custom Kitchens...the Cedar Project.

Maybe instead of "EAT" you could do "FUN" or maybe even a funny random word like "JUMP" or "DANCE" that would look nice.

I love the idea of opening that wall with a glass window to let in light. If this isn't possible, I like the idea of wooden beams that match the floor color, then add a row of smaller cabinets over the existing cabinets with glass doors to store all of your colorful serving items.

If you have a beautiful view opposite of this space, would consider placing a mirror above the cabinets.

Have you thought of moving the stove? If you placed the stove directly under the peak of the wall, would make a beautiful statement wall wit a large hood. Just something to think about!

Add a big queen beam...could use just a fake out one . By that I mean a box that it 15 inches by 10 inches and however long the width of the wall is. Attach it at a height above the cabinets maybe over the island. Add a vertical piece in the middle. Then paint your yellow wall and the new beam white like the cupboards. You could add a heavier crown to the cabinets to give illusion of height. Do not put junk up there .
Alternatively, add a stunning window into the dead space.

I would bring the ceiling down by painting the ceiling a darker shade of the color on the wall and if possible bring the lighting down.

Add light and artwork and visual interest at eye level. Place a chair railing at the same height as the top of the side walls and paint everything above the same dark or darker color as the ceiling.

Use lighte under the counter and add lighting that faces downward over art on the side walls.

Try to use wide art rather than tall.

Since this is from June, I wonder if she made a decision about this space.

My money is on the moose.

Oh boy, someone screwed up on selection of the cabinets. This is why staggering cabinet heights helps break up a wall of cabinets. Also the poster who said to put some glass doors might help, but I doubt it. You could place blue and white platters, plates, etc, in the style of Charles Faudree or just remove a section of the cabinets and rework it. This looks like a criminal line up of kitchen cabinets, I chose the section number three as the offender! Or I guess the moose might have done it!

I enjoy all the many comments and wonderful suggestions. Some inexpensive and doable and others quite out of the question expensive. Yes, it has been 8 months since I began this post but there is life other than decorating :). The contractor, cabinet maker and I all studied the type of cabinets to put in. YES we all wanted to stagger them but with the 'off center' pitch in the ceiling this was not doable. I like painting the top portion of the vaulted wall a darker color. I have searched for very large items or signs to place in the space to bring the cabinets down. I fell in love with this picture and my daughter is painting it for me. It's 50x50 canvas and fits right in with my whimsical décor.

How exciting some progress is being made. What a fun picture that will bring some character to your space, and how special your daughter will be painting it. Looking forward to seeing updated pictures!

Per my daughter, the Cow will be finished next weekend. Won't be able to get it until I travel to her house in SC. She does paintings by request if anyone is interested. I should post some of her work.

I really Like the dark paint over the cabinets...helps to bring it all together.

And I love love love the idea of painting a beautiful sky with slight clouds as above.

Is that an exterior wall? if so, I'd make as much of that wall into WINDOW as possible.

I would take 4 large square white painted window mirrors evenly spaced ( windows with panes) a round piece of art or a clock in the middle then paint the wall a darker neutral grey. All the shapes will balance the large triangle.

Your daughter got right on that! Is it a huge trip to go and get it? Can make for a fun long weekend, huh? So excited to see it!!!

Well, I'm here at my daughters house and the cow painting is not complete....lol. Maybe by the time I leave for my return trip home it will be finished.

They sell a beautiful wall covering cut out of a large tree with branches. I would use this tree and hang framed pictures of family members on the branches. You could add more photos as the family grows.

add molding up to break line of ceiling and then fill in triangle right up to pitch of ceiling with cabinet material and paint all white. Line vertical molding trim to line up with cabinet lines. Think this would look beautiful. Nothing to clean and nothing to distract the eye to make cabinets look dwarfed. I would paint walls white and change hardware on cabinets to black to compliment counter tops. Hopefully you have more black décor in your space.

Well here it is as I promised! My daughter completed the painting and it now has a permanent home above the cabinets to fill up that empty space. It will be placed higher later when I get a taller ladder.

I'd just get rid of some of the cabinets. break the line up. add in some open shelving if you need the space. you're going to have to move the cabinets up as well if you want to be able to use the counter at all.

My first thought was a large window as a few others suggested, but with that wonderful cow....you have nailed it!!

The logical thing is to remove the upper cabinets and have them re-installed with the standard 18" spacing. You may lose a cabinet or two to match the placement of the lower and upper cabinets for symmetry, but it will give you usable space between cabinets and counter. It will also reduce the amount of dead space above the uppers.

I agree with felizlady. The correct layout is crucial to balance the whole layout. In my opinion the cooker looks dangerously close to the wall cabinets. In the U.K. there are specific guidelines in place regarding spacing. Your ultimate goal should always be to add value to your property, even if you are planning to stay.

You can make it a focal point by adding some pattern and colors :)
