Wall to Wall Carpet in Dining Room

We just purchased a home with great character. One issue I am facing is that the great room has a perfect spot for a harvest table. The only issue is that is has wall to wall carpeting. This part of the room was originally going to be a porch. Because of this there is no foundation only concrete posts. They put wall to wall carpeting to keep the floor from being cold in the winter. I do not want to put an area rug over the existing carpeting (the area rug will always be crumpling) . If we remove the carpet and continue the hardwood like the other part of the room, I am afraid it will be too cold on the floor. Help!! What to do?
