I would probably go white it is timeless and works with modern or traditional spaces, I would change all the handles, while painting plug the holes you have so you can choose whatever style you want, I would not put handles or knobs on those weird cabinets above the wall cabinets in hope they will blend in. Removing those overheads above the counter will make a huge difference. These pics are a before and after I did for a client it made the space feel totally different, also when you replace the counter don't do the angled corners . The kitchen actually has a good layout so that helps alot.

Thank you, Patricia! I love white kitchens as I tend to lean toward classic design. We were also considering a medium gray and even a light taupe. The rest of our house is a good mix of my traditional and my husbands industrial style.

I hadn't thought about the angles on the counters!! It's a bit of a tight squeeze through there, would you just chop it off where the angles begin? Or maybe round it?

It's nearly impossible to choose a paint color without seeing the new tile, granite and backsplash. Do you have good pictures of these?

We are choosing the backsplash and granite based on the paint color we choose for the cabinets. We do have the floor tile and it's a white base with cremes, grays and beiges. I can snap a photo tonight.

I really love the style of the doors in those examples... I wish we had new doors in the budget. That light gray is pretty much perfect. Really love that.

Oh! Also, the lack of knobs on the cabinets way up top is brilliant. Those are the most ridiculous cabinets. Luckily my hubby is extremely tall.

It's much easier to match paint to granite than the other way around, I can't emphasize this enough. If you doing this work for style, white paint is the longer term trend. Gray is a short term trend.

You might be sorry in a few years if you choose to paint the cabinets gray. It's trendy now, but who knows for how long. Classic white will always have a following. You can add touches of gray with countertops and appliances, or even a backsplash.

Pick the counter, backsplash and floor you want, then find a paint to match. Don't do it the other way around. Paint is cheap, easy to change, low-risk. The hard surfaces are expensive, time consuming construction projects.

I would keep the smaller upper wall cabinets, but replace the doors with glass doors and put LED lights in those. I wanted to do that, but think I may be 2 inches short to have it work for me.
You could also choose 1 or 2 wall cabinets to put glass and light them with LED's. It would make the kitchen look larger and brighter. [houzz=]
