Our MB has double doors that open off the great rm. So it must always look nice. The light ash 4 poster bed has the 2 bed pillows behind the 2 king shams, 2 square pillows & a lumbar pillow. The decorative pillows are in the same light blue damask as the comforter.

Did you steal my Phoebe for that photo? :) Mine is not allowed in my bedroom anymore because she gave me asthma :( Besides, I just changed to white comforter so her grey hair would make a mess. After reading this thread, I may use too many pillows. But, my husband makes the bed so he's the one who has to deal with them :)

I used old music postcards that my family has kept for a really long time and made this mosaic. :D

I have a collection (addiction) of vintage quilts and use those to change the "look" of my bed.

I don't think anything makes a bed more inviting than an upholstered headboard, bed linens (including a bedskirt and throw at the foot of the bed) and 1-3 accent pillows. In fact, that's why we offer custom headboards online (Canada-wide) with designer fabrics so anyone can get "the designer look without the designer."

I have a bed cover that I love, to add interest I fold down the top to just see enough of the (new to match) blanket, the back of the coverlet, then the cover itself. Pillows match. It's simple, but my room is too small for extra items, even if at night.

For several years I've had a duvet and euro shams but I'm over the look. I can't use the handmade quilts I love because the cats that usually snooze on the covers have frequent tummy problems. This is simple to turn down and it fits in the washer. The fact that I really like the look is a definite plus. As I get older I seem to want simpler. The walls and surfaces are less cluttered and now the bed follows suit.

I like a pretty simple bed, always only white sheets, but like lace or something on the ends of the pillowcases and the top sheet. I use a white down blanket, and currently have a nice patterned comforter and shams in a blue print. No extra pillows, just shams in front of my bed pillows. I might get a white decorator pillow to put in front of the shams, but like some of the other comments here, I got tired of removing all the excess pillows at night and having to replace them in the morning. I like looking at them but not dealing with them LOL!

Very high quality Australian brand bedding, Sheridan and Actil. Then hubby broke the elastic on all the fitted sheets, taking them off too fast.

4F Lighting...I use a toy poodle! She's nestled among the many pillows all day...I just see a little head popping up.

I won't post pics but our bed is a hilarious mess with too many pillows (6), a mass of stuffed animals including a bison, a giant squid, a lot of bears, and the beloved bear pillow pet (Mr. Bear) who was given to my husband for Christmas a few years back that he sleeps with every night. Frankly, any decorator worth his or her salt would run screaming in horror from our bedroom. However, it is a very fun place to hang out, especially when all 3 cats are sprawling in the craziness with us.

My cats accessorize it for me!!

I do have a handful of bed pillows & a nice, white bedspread. Under...nothing but 800+ White Egyptian cotton.

I always think beds are best accessorized simply, while adding some extra texture and life to the bed.

Artwork above the headboard, variety of pillows and best of all my cats snuggled in the mix.

In summer: light duvet folded down, four regular pillows (all used at night), teddy bear, dog.
In winter: same, but with a Guatemalan bedspread covering all except the dog and teddy bear.

@karenmadgwick, OMG it's gorgeous, just my cup of tea. wish i could do something excessively large and heavy over my headboard, but, alas, this is earthquake country. instead i use tapestries and draperies.

You people are too funny! :) This thread HAS taught me that my shams are too small and I have too many pillows and I need to bring drama to my bedroom. Hmmm, I guess that means that I just HAVE to go shopping :)

The boudoir is a work in progress, and I'm not even there to take a pic right now! But we have a mission-type cherry headboard and this is our coverlet set from JCP. It's a bluegray color called steel blue, I think. I love it!

The blanket underneath is the same color as these two clowns. They aren't supposed to shed (yeah, right!) :)

I bought Euro Shams, regular pillow shams, and several accent pillows in coordinating fabrics. At first it looked lovely but having to take everything down at bedtime and put it all back in the morning became a chore. Now there is nothing on the bed but the regular pillows....and a pile of pretty pillows in the corner of my bedroom my cats like to burrow in.

This boy & his brother like to accessorise the bed - especially after it's just been made!

A couple of cats and two Border Collies complete my bed ensemble!

Okay I have 8 - count 'em 8 - pillows but I love them especially the one that says "Love"! At night they sleep in an old tv armoire that held a square television (describing the style and to literal shape) as our flat screen sits on top! And please - no judging about having a tv in the bedroom! ;)

feather Gail- I'm a little confused, is that your room; grey wall, upcycled headboard? I think your bedroom is on the right track. Lamps are a good scale, and the headboard has an earthy character- your bedding would do well with a little more pop since the headboard has such prominance at first glance. Dressing a queen size bed that has a pillow-top mattress. Sounds as if you're using a feather bed over the mattress too- that's truly comfort. You may want to buy a king size duvet & cover. The dynamic is tricky beconming a fine line between over dressing your bed or not. Watch for too much plump, I would reccommend a down product agian, baffle box construction. Unfortunately each manufacture has their idea of what a king sized quilt should measure. Since your bed is a qn, the top of the mattress is 60 x 80. Measure the heigth of your mattress when it is covered with your feather bed & mattress pad & fitted sheet. It may be as deep as 18 or up to 22" . A general note for covering your mattress should be the depth of the mattress plus 5" longer to cover the box spring. Example: WIDTH 60+ 36+ 10= 111" Now for length- an 80" long qn bed does not need to cover the length at both ends, remember using a comforter is not the same coverage as a bedspread.The magic number as a sample qn mattress at 18" deep w/5" of overhang to the box spring: 80+18+5= 103".
I can't see, is there a rug on the floor- or hardwood and a rug over the top under your bed? I see a mauve or pink blanket? Is this an heirloom, temporary piece or a throw if you intend to use daily? If it's a throw- toss it across your bed, allowing it to gather softly, and drape at one corner. If this is the case I would include a color from your floor & rug as a toss cushion: 22", 20 & 18" square cushions plus 2 rectangula rlumbar pillows- I would recommend pillow forms containing a blend of feather & down as long as allergies are not a problem; otherwise all Down. Here's where you begin to have a little fun & creativity. Choose 3 or four different patterns with the same 3 colors. A stripe, a floral & a graphic. A fabric with a little lurex thread in silver, gold or copper depending on your taste. The addition of these pillows add Wham, color & dimension. Your headboard really comes together when different heights are placed on top of your bed. Your bed becomes an oasis of tranquility.

Karin Madgwick I agree that your bedroom is stunning. For all the people that can't understand this discussion - The world is so crazy we all agree, so when you come into your own home it should welcome and invite you. It sets you up to care about how you treat yourself. Crawling into a beautiful bed with all the pillows and fluff at the end of a rough day is just a pure pleasure of life. And it doesn't take much to get that luxury.

Now, back to the task. Emmeline, you are definitely on the right track. The lamps are perfectly scaled with the headboard and love the color of the wall. I like 3 euro pillow across the back, the two sleeping pillows and 1 or 2 smaller pillows. Personally, I coordinate the 3 euros with the duvet and the 2 smaller ones are personal statements (bright colors). No one can see my bed unless you walk into the room and everytime I'm in there I enjoy a deep breath knowing I'll be there soon!

I have two pillows, four shams (two brown and two white) and a decorative cowhide cushion. Some people may find that is a lot of pillows but it makes the bed look luxurious and people often comment that they want to jump into it!

I have 1000 count sheets in both brown and white so that I can play with the look, alternating the sheets and the shams to change it up.

I also have a brown coordinating coverlet that I use as a blanket for impromptu naps.
