From the looks of the picture, you have a very modern style kitchen. I would go with a black granite with very little movement in it. Since granite stays pretty busy, you may even want to go with quartz. That would be my first choice, but black all the way. Will look great with the floor color and the modern cabinets.

I'd choose quartz if the local market has moved past granite in fashion. Ask a real estate agent about black vs. other colors. In my neighborhood, black is not a desirable option for new buyers because it shows every water drop. It usually gets ripped out. But in the larger geographical area, it is popular for those who like drama. YMMV.

You definitely need a contrasting color. I wouldn't do anything white.

Stay away from marble Beautiful but can stain.

I think black would look great with the stainless appliances. It's a color that never goes out of style.

If you want something different, use soapstone! It can go from greenish hues to a grayish black. It has some veining but not a lot. Stay away from soapstone pieces with too much veining as it can be soft. You can oil it to make it a deeper color, but that is just for aesthetic purposes. You can leave it a matte finish and not put anything on it. Very cool!

I like the idea of something darker like a charcoal grey or black as others have suggested. A quartz material would be much less expensive than granite and look more modern. In either case, I would select something with low movement in it to appeal the most for resale. Here is a link to check out quartz options...

Quartz in a very dark grey has my vote and can be run up behind the stove if not adding a backsplash. If installing backsplash, a stainless steel subway tile, perahps in a herringbone pattern.

If you want it to have universal appeal then you can't go wrong with Absolute Black. It is also more cost effective than many of the other stones. I would consider honing it so it will be charcoal grey instead of black. Consider white tiles for the backsplash to keep it light.
