Your description is confusing. On the one hand you say you pulled up the rock patio and then later say you want it. You might want to clarify the concern.

with the stone you currently have as a patio? To keep everything secure and not have maintenance issues, #1 choice would be mortared to a new concrete slab with mortared joints. A second choice would be to make a 4-6" compacted aggregate base, set the stones in a 1" layer of stone dust, and fill the gaps with a polymeric dust product made for large (1-4") joints - read the bag so you don't get the standard stuff for joints
