Try looking your question up on youtube as there are hundreds of DIY channels showing how to do anything you can imagine. My husband had found it very helpful when he's not sure about something.

In Australia we have a product called ESP one puts on first to laminates. If that's gloss paint, just rough it down well with a power sander and the paint will stick.

ESP is highly toxic and must be applied in very well ventilated area.

There is product called Chalk Paint (not to be confused with chalkboard paint). It adheres to any surface without any prep! There are a few companies that make it (i.e. Annie Sloan which is said to be the best) I've used it on my laminate cabinets and it worked wonderfully and looks beautiful! There are many tutorial videos on YouTube as well as on DIY sites or even Annie Sloan's site. The bonus is its also Eco friendly with very low VOC! With proper prep -- cleaning and lots of sanding/deglossing. Talk to your best finisher as they will be familiar with the products commonly used in Switzerland.

I had a similar gloss lacquer on my cabinets--well, maybe not THAT shiny, but nearly so--and would have kept it but it proved horrifically expensive to reproduce after 20 years of use. It must be sprayed on and to do that after installation is quite an ordeal, with a price tag exceeding the entire cost of most cabinets. I ended up having them brush-painted in a less glossy finish for one-seventeenth the cost of spraying. I'd try to enjoy the ease of cleaning while that high-end gloss finish lasts, or, if the room is large, choose a section a paint it a contrasting color.

I was hoping to repaint the cabinet in a muted grey to tone down the contrast between white of the cabinets and the granite, but I have not come across this type of paint/wrap before so not sure if it is feasible. Chalk paint would not stay on and I am wondering if sanding or primer would be worth it. It looks as if the options are: live with it and work on other elements or replace the kitchen cabinetry.

Hi ChookI see a problem in replacing only the doors that the surrounding cabinetry will clash. Not good look.Son loved Oz but back with us ;-)

Thanks chook very useful. In the end I will bring in a professional painter to see what they advise. Techniques and products vary locally and we really need to know what the core material is that we are working with.

And they always say " test in an inconspicuous place".

If your objective is to bring change, you can also think of painting wall with contrast color. Or use wall paper. It should workout much cheaper and less effort. Let me know your comment on my feedback

Before repainting the cabinets reconsider adding color to walls of the kitchen if you can ! At the moment from Feng Shui perspective it is not balance too much Metal/ earth dominance !

The blog "Young House Love" has a tutorial on repainting kitchen cabinets. They talk about a product that removes the shine as a prep.

My spray repaint estimate for lacquer was $17,000. Brush repaint by different contractor was $1,000. Really.
