I like the rug and I also like how you have placed the table and chairs. I think you want something snazzy, like this is, under that table so you can smile when you see it through the top.

Could you try turning the rug the other and see how it looks?

Kelly, if the table must remain that close to the wall, you are better off without a rug - you will have already experienced the function problems involved, I'm betting, and a piece of artwork in that size over the table will fill any visual void better. If the table can be moved out, then consider either a round or square that allows the chairs to push back without catching on the edges, and leaves you an 8" border of floor.

To me, the rug is far too dominant...it's the only thing you see when you first look at the photo. What is the function of the space? Is this an eating table? Game table? Taking up space table? Are there additional photos that I'm not seeing? The existing painting seems to pick up the color in the corner of the sofa that I see...which could be a nice unifying element in the space IF that's what you want. What is your style? Traditional? Transitional?
What is the size of the rug? If this is the dining room, the table and chairs need to be placed more centrally in the space and the size of the rug could be bigger...but NOT such a dominant pattern. Good luck!

It's possible, Kelly, but not necessarily an improvement: if you routinely seat 3, placing a rectangular one against the wall could save space - but the trade-off is that someone is always facing the wall. I think the table you have now is a nicer option.

I note you have a chandelier that is not centered over the table or the rug. Align all three of them and photo again.

The table and chairs disappear into the rug, and it's too small anyway. I think you're better off rugless.

If you love your picture ...maybe incorporate a colour from that ...
When you cover the chairs ....
Maybe turn your picture up the other way ....

I think the rug is ok, but I would centralize the dining set, and position the chairs with their backs to the straight sides of the rug rather than diagonal.

If it is a small space I think I would seriously consider a long narrow wood table that has drop down sides....I find them to be multi-purpose pieces. If it is fully extended it can be another counter or even a buffet for parties. Later on it can be used as a sofa table. For now you can push it up against the wall and it is out of the way but you can still eat at it and have a chair on each end (made for 2)--a round table needs room all the way AROUND it to get the best use of it. I wish I knew how to attach a pic from the houzz site to explain better. If you know how to do that...Im all ears
