If you do replace the shutters, make sure that they are wide enough to actually cover a window if they were to really shut.......The ones that are on the house now are way to narrow and look awkward. Even though you may never actually use a shutter, it should always be wide enough to act as a shutter because it looks better this way....

I would suggest painting the new shutters and the trim above the garage a deeper color such as hunter green or black.

New large light fixtures would look great in a black wrought iron.

You might also consider replacing the plants in front of the house with a continuous ground cover that is approximately 24" tall.....Not sure of your climate, so you can talk to a local landscape contractor for the best plants.

You should not make those shutters big enough to cover the windows. That would be a 36" wide shutter per window and those are doubles! Yes they should be increased in size slightly and maybe a different profile. I do agree got to black or dark green accent colors. Your garage door is up, but that is also another option to BARN up the house.

My first thought was if you want it to look like a farmhouse you need to add a porch. My second thought was that dark green would be a good accent color. And I think shutters that are big enough to actually cover the windows would be way too large.

I'm a big fan of Thoth's idea. This is just one more example of his thinking outside the box. By the way, when it comes to design, most people don't have an original thought in their head. Americans ARE way too shutter happy. Ninety percent of the population can't wait to purchase and install high contrast plastic shutters on double ganged windows.

Hey! I would actually remove the shutters entirely. We had a similar issue w/ our midcentury house w/ these half shutters that are just aesthetic shutters and aren't aesthetically pleasing whatsoever. Here are some farm house photos for inspiration

I agree shutters should be big enough (or close) to cover the window, which would be to big so nix them. Paint the trim black. Add window boxes under the windows. Paint over the medallion above garage, it doesn't add anything. Install a pergola over the garage doors and cover with a vine. I would pick a fun color for the door to create interest. Create a seating area by the door. Larger lights would be nice.

I really don't think your house design lends itself to a farmhouse look, at least not to any farmhouses I'm accustomed to. It's a lovely house and I think you have many other options rather than farmhouse. Good luck.
