I think you have a very nice kitchen. I wouldn't paint the cabinets white, as it wouldn't blend very well with the fridge or other appliances. If anything, maybe a dark wooded color. The countertops would make a big difference, too. You have a nice kitchen!

It's a gut at this point to improve things.

The cabinets maybe okay if you can live with them. I would suggest changing the appliances and counter tops and then see if you still want to colour the cabinets.

If money is no concern then a total Reno is an option.

You have a great space to work with. The cabinets are a little dated but i think changing the countertops would make the biggest difference.
Turning the area with the oven and fridge into an "appliance wall" would modernise it too (see the oven fridge area in the Dutch Kitchens pic). Using white cabinets on the built in appliance wall and a white countertop on the peninsula will allow you to leave the wooden cabinets as they are.

I think you could update those by adding trim on the top of doors to cover up the cut out handles ...paint the and then add hardware
