I would go with nothing on top, the cabinet display is nice and this distracts from it. If you want something on top I would go for something with more substance, but I think your cabinet display looks fab!

Since you have a lot of glass in the cabinet, you could do a few old glass bottles. A larger size then a medium and lastly a bit smaller sized. Or one larger item that is unique and different with black in it.

I like it with noting on top and I would edit some of the stuff in the cabinet to allow your eye to focus on the beauty of your pieces rather than being too busy and someone doesn't know what to look at.

Ok i love decorating and I couldn't let that space go to rest! sorry can't go along with everyone--There is a lot of space up there--at least 20 inches wouldn't you say? How about a attractive platter -rectangular shaped? Or a round large plate with 2 apothecary jars(large15" and another 12") and fill them with corks. I love collecting corks from different dinners we have or go to and right the date and event on them. Just a few suggestions-but it seems like a lot of space that would go to waste...

Can you visualize if you took the screen away from the left side and hung plates or pictures on each side of the cabinet--it would make it look balanced. Right now it is a big piece in the middle of the wall--no other accessories to soften it. Make sense?

One more comment and then I will shut up! You don't have any other color in the room besides brown--do you think some red pottery and a red runner on the table might help?

Thank you Maureen for the nice suggestions:-)yes u r right I feel there is a big gap that's why I wanted to pick something for the top:-) but I can't remove the screen since it hides a router with its wires. I could try to push the screen to the left a bit though.As for the black,there are some pieces with color in the room which the photo did not show. And there are white cages of different sizes and styles spreading around the screen to break the darkness, since it's blank.

And yes I'm planning to hang something colorful on the right side,what do you think?

Yes-I think if you hang possibly 2 framed pictures(maybe with reds in the art) at least 2--11 by 14 pieces,dark frames. What is your interest or style?

Can you paint the walls? It looks like you have crown molding but you can hardly tell--it blends in too much with the ceiling and wall--maybe contrast? Say, a cream,off white tone to warm up the room? Not actally what you wanted to hear!! Thinking -- I just wanted to put a few pieces on top the cabinet!!

I would love actually to paint the wall but till now I couldn't fall for any color in particular. Thus thought better be safe and leave the whole thing till I feel comfortable with a specific color.I have layered frames in dark brown or black and the paintings are very colorful red, green..etc

That sounds good! Then, don't forget the runner--it would help connect the pieces.

Do you have any other table or small bombay chest you can put on that wall other than the black plexiglass one? the reason why I ask is because you have a lot of detail and weight to the other pieces in the room and it looks a little out of place? When decorating with a contemporary viv go with big accent pieces--the little owls might be cute placed in the kitchen? All just suggestions...

I like the ship by itself on top of the cabinet. It'a a strong piece, it can be the focal point. There is a lot to look at just with the boat itself, its got a lot of detail. No need to add more detail. Hope that helps. Charmean Neithart

I could replace this with a mirrored chest of drawers, which is smaller than this one.but probably I have to remove the paintings above as well if I'm to go for the mirrored one and then hang a mirror.I appreciate your suggestions thank you again Maureen

Yes it helped Charmean. I tried it now and it looks nice actually.guess I'm keeping the boat and getting a horse and then I could just switch between them.

Yes dear, fun and hard as I know I have to stick to one style. But most of the items I'm trying to bring into the design are of sentimental value to us. Glad I got to keep the ship/boat:-)

Hi noorina --- to me the cabinet looks better with a bare top - but I can see that it is not going to be to your style. The boat is not to my liking because it is not solid enough so I think if you got a larger Ming horse and maybe some other larger items, then you can change out for differant times . The trick is to just have one show piece at a time on top. Also the balance is off because you have two tall furniture pieces side by side and nothing on the right side so your visual tips to the left. If you have something about the size of the screen for the right side that would help. Perhaps a pedistal with the Armillary Sphere Globe on it .But I think the screen is too tall and solid to be beside the cabinet. having to many things the same height together then it starts to form a wall . See in the examples that Kelli sent - the picture on the left shows items that are about 2/3 the height of the cabinet- a much better balance.Also I think you need to beef up the size of the crown molding . You could add a smaller molding about 3 or 4 inches below the crown and paint it to match the crown color then that would match to the top of your cabinet - and if you are thinking of painting the walls - try a richer color so the crown shows more . Anyway a few more ideas for you to work with .

You could try that, but I am not a fan of faux plants if that's what it is. I still think your not going to be happy with the look because the screen is just to tall beside your cabinet . But try some of the ideas you have gotten from everyone - you will find the right look for you. Your room is maybe getting a little too full of two many dark brown items - it's very heavy looking . Might be time to do some editing . Nice things but too many things.I can see you have very rich taste and you like several styles.

How about this for now?Or I could add another ladder bookcase instead of the leather cabinet with pillows.Thus two ladder bookcases on each side of the cabinet and then hang colorful framed paintings

That looks a lot better--no money spent! I do still like the idea of a slightly darker paint color and the idea of extending the crown molding.All in all looks great!
