A headboard will help. Also, I'd choose a totally different nightstand for the other side of the bed. So you're not automatically comparing one side with the other. Maybe a distressed green (like the tiles surrounding the fireplace) painted pedestal table...

These are great suggestions--what color for the headboard? A neutral, I'm assuming if I want to keep it light?

I would gather all the smaller frames together, the ones on the fireplace mantle and on the desk, and hang them on one wall. On a smaller scale than this :-)

i wouldn't put another table because it may look too off-balanced. Maybe a floor lamp instead of another bureau!?

@Darzy, unfortunately not. It's a really tiny space in between the bed and the larger closet, which has bi-fold doors. I love the inspiration pic though that you sent!

Chimin' in! Your Victorian room is so cool! Please play up the green[s] from your fireplace surround! It is fantastic and so rare in today's bedrooms. Using a Victorian font, monogram some cream velvet pillows for the bed in your green, for example.

During the Victorian era, iron beds as well as rattan items were popular so it would be a nice addition to your room. If used in a headboard and possibly footboard, it would be appropriate historically, as well as giving you a lighter feel than a heavy wood or upholstered one. A wicker/rattan headboard would also work with your Caribbean art as well as your furniture style.

If you choose to go this way, add a wicker chair by the fireplace with cushions containing a hit of green. A rocker, club chair or a bistro chair would work. Depends on how much floor space you have and how much room you need to open the closet door.

Beside the bed you could place a small cabinet - maybe wicker - with a small non-wicker-Victorian lamp [leaded glass?]. Do not over-do the wicker - 2 or 3 pieces tops. Leaded shades with some green would bring more color and pattern to that wall while not interfering with your art pieces.

Clear off all tops of things. Mantle: maybe some candlesticks in chunky holders is enough and do not use green candles, please. Dresser top too. Seems cluttered.

In rooms with strong themes, accessories should be closely curated. If you want to use photos, put them in Victorian frames, for example.

The rug at the foot of the bed brings the room down. If it is an heirloom, roll it up, tie it up, and stand it in a corner. Look for a rug that has your green in it - even a touch is good - in a traditional style.

How about this one? It doesn't match at all. Which is nice. It's 21" wide, 22" tall and $150. It's wood metal, with a hint, hint of antique red. Then, I'd try hanging the oval mirror you have behind the door above it for additional height.

This adorable table paired with the oval mirror would be smashing. If not in this room, here is a lot of bang for the buck for a little wall somewhere else in the home! I want a set too!

I'd add a small table (as Carolins suggested), a chair (as Ann Dee suggested) in front of the fireplace and recycle elsewhere the one by the door, a tall lamp on the table to balance the height of the dresser, an iron bedstead with a tall foot or an antique one also with header and footer (perhaps Eastlake?), and a rug with green. I’d also de-clutter the the fireplace and dresser - less is more.

Just noticed. I’d find something more interesting for bedding. Perhaps an antique lace spread (tablecloth) to partly cover your quilt with cut-lace shams or something else in the period, perhaps with a green spread over the quilt but under the lace? I’m sure someone knows more about victorian fabrics and bedding. Speak up, please!:}

I like everyone's advice so much, but probably won't be going with any dark Victorian accessories/furniture as the goal is to lighten the room up. I love the original dark woodwork in our house, but it's tough to keep every room feeling light and airy with so much wood. As I noted, we love antiques, and have a lot, but like to mix them with modern and eclectic items to keep everything feeling fresh and not too "period".

We'll definitely declutter the top of the dresser and the fireplace as we figure everything out. So far, I'm thinking adding in a light natural fiber rug, perhaps an Indian kantha quilt with some of the green/turquoise of the fireplace tile in it, and then doing the gallery hang of smaller pieces that @Carolin suggested. As for lamps. I'm still playing around, but I think we might do a modern brass fixture on the ceiling and then a black task lamp?

The headboard and small circular side table will help everything else fall into place!

In addition to a taller headboard, you might want to consider bed risers.

@hatetoshop We're definitely considering getting a taller metal bed frame for the room now, especially since they're not that expensive.

Could you change the swing of the door and place the chest of drawers on the mirror wall?
It might give you more options with both the headboard and the bedside tables.

I love the table in your design board, and the headboard. I wasn't sure if you are thinking of changing your curtains to the tie backs shown? If so, may I vote no? I think a contemporary patterned curtain could lighten the room, though.

@bschr: It's a nice thought, but actually, there's no room on the wall with the mirror for the chest of drawers even if we were to switch the swing of the door (which would also involve trying to repair the frame/jamb of our very old wood work + carve out new).

@ciscomo: I agree re: tiebacks :) We'll keep the curtains as is without them. I would be open to a patterned curtain, but they're very expensive/hard to find for our height ceiling. The curtains would need to be about 102" high, and we would rather work with what we've got and spend our limited budget on the headboard/night stand/etc. When we first moved in, I looked everywhere for affordable panels, but our IKEA linen look curtains were the only thing tall enough that didn't bust the budget!

Just wanted to give an update on our room, which now has a new rug, a new headboard, and some relocated art (apologies for the poor quality photos). We still need to add a bench at the foot of the bed, de-clutter our bureau, add a brass ceiling fixture, and get some lamps, but at least it's in process!

On the left side of the bed we really need a table with a drawer. I'm tempted by the circular suggestions above to give some variety of shapes in the room. However, the table I've placed there is one we already have and would be free! Do folks think it looks okay? Or perhaps it would look better dry painted with white paint or green paint to lighten things up (it's not a precious antique, but simply a solid hand-me-down). Do you think a turquoise/green kantha quilt will make the room too busy paired with the Indian silk painting above the bed, or would it introduce some needed color?

I like the Overstock.com lamp best for your room. Looking at the picture, the printed shams so close to the tufted headboard & picture over the bed just doesn't work for me. It is too much. The suggestion of monogrammed shams may be a better choice.

@Carol: Do you mean something in gold or brass in terms of matching the mirror? If that's the case, then perhaps we can find a classic brass candlestick lamp in an antique store--it's so hard to get something gold-toned that doesn't scream 1990s or dated.

@glschisler: So it sounds like also having a printed duvet would also be too much pattern? It would be easy to get some crisp white shams (sans monogram as my husband nixed those) to replace the Indian cut-out shams to cut down on the business of the room. Or perhaps we remove the painting and keep with a parlor hang of Caribbean art over the bureau instead?

Did you try the bureau turned to face the bed left of the window? Then wall lamps or skinny lights over floating shelf tables would keep the balance better.

@decoenthusiaste: That's a great illustration of different lamp types and dimensions--thanks for sharing. We did try the bureau to the left of the window before and felt that there wasn't optimal room to access the drawers, but perhaps we'll revisit it.

Am late to the party, but really enjoying teh suggestions! Congrats on the headboard, which centers the room and adds some real interest, as well as drawing attention from the furniture at the sides.

I wouldn't sweat the table you have -- it matches and is unobtrusive. I agree with those suggesting a taller lamp there to better balance the tall stuff opposite, but that's about the best you can do -- you have to work with the space and its constraints without making yourself into a pretzel in search of perfect symmetry!
