Lia, Happy is concerned that this toxic dangerous Pokeweed plant with aggressive roots may grow into her ground drains. This plant is so bad they prevent the sale of this plant and its seeds. Apparently a fairly fast grower. It is growing next to the shared fence with her rear neighbor. Neighbor and Happy are not on great terms. But, conditions will only get worse and make it harder to kill the more it takes a foothold next to the fence.

First of all I would make sure that you have absolutely the correct identification on this. Plant identification can be tricky.
Then I would see if the plant is listed as an invasive or banned species to plant in the city. In which case you can contact the city about the removal. For plant identification purposes, cut a piece of it, a generous piece and bring it in to an agricultural station or a professional landscaping company.

Did he at least correctly identify the plant for you??? Happy call the City or County office or maybe a large local nursery and send them photo of this plant and at least get it identified. I can't even imagine that your neighbor actually could have planted it, since seeds nor plants are available for purchase because of their toxicity. As AI pointed out it is not harmful to birds. They often consume this plant, and then afterwards drop the seeds themselves while perched on a fence or wires nearby. Safe to say there is no value in trying to guess what your neighbor may, or may not, know about this plant. Short of your son going there with shovel in hand asking the man if he can help him remove this toxic plant (a return for his past favor). Other than that, sadly Happy since you are not interested in doing that, then you will just have to live with the Pokeweed, allow it to take over your drains, and just plan on paying the large plumbing bill in the future. But since you are opposed to even talking with the "hillbilly" neighbors, there just doesn't seem to be any other way to get rid of the plant. Guess its best to close the chapter on this problem and just wait for the drainage problem to become a reality.

You may not know but the plant at the back of your yard is really a weed. The "American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana)" is a large, native North American perennial plant known for its vibrant magenta stems, dark purple-black berries, all which is highly toxic. Every part of the plant is poisonous to humans and mammals, with the roots and seeds containing the highest concentrations of toxins. This plant can get as tall as 10 feet and reek havoc with fences and other things. Even the leaves and berries should be bagged to dispose of safely.

Given your husband's kindness in the past of helping us move ___________, that we really appreciated, my OH and son would be happy to return the favor and would gladly come over to help your husband get the roots and plant out of your yard for the safety of your children and pets. Especially since this every part of the plant is so very toxic.

She doesn't need to deal with a wonky fence to repair, and you dont need the roots causing damage. So in reality, the longer it's there the harder it will be to remove it. 3. If it's Giant Ragweed: She can simply pour the herbicide inside, or even just yank the base out of the ground. Because ragweed doesn't have a giant taproot, it will pull up much easier than a pokeweed would.

Note for her safety: If it is Giant Ragweed, it sheds massive amounts of airborne pollen right now in late August. I have pokeweed here and I pull it out and toss it. I don't let it grow. I love elderberry:) I used to have some, but it didn't make it during the landscape project. My MIL has one and she collects the fruit. I love the elderflower syrup..yummm.

That was the favorite berry that my grandmother would make wine from. The elderberry. She actually made wine from all kinds of things, but I would see her down in the field just about disappearing as she picked. I remember one wine that I tasted, and it was quite bitter, but a beautiful yellow color and it was made from dandelion flowers.

Is pokeweed elderberry the same as your elderberry print Tessa? That pokeweed Elderberry is mildly toxic it said on Google but the voice Google didn't say that but when you scroll down to it and hit the more it tells you more stuff and it says it's mildly toxic it will cause stomach cramps diarrhea and nausea
