Oak kitchen cabinets dilemma

I am thinking of painting my 80's oak kitchen cabinets on a low budget. I am thinking of a cream color to match the backsplash. What do you think? Or perhaps another color?

Here is an example of white cabinets that make the space look larger and cleaner. Painting yours would make a difference. For a low budget approach you could update your counters to stainless steel as well. You can have a metal shop cut to fit or you can buy a stainless paint with a clear coat that looks really close.

Try changing the wall color first instead of painting the cabinetry.

The wall color is a light grey and it has just been recently painted

What about pulling one of the deeper grays out of the flooring?

thank you, the floor is slate and is is pretty dark I am afraid it will make the room quite dark. Do you think a lighter color would be a good idea?

If your walls are gray, then I would look at something in the gray/beige family. It doesn't have to be too dark.

I do like the white cabinets S.J. Janis posted. You could also do a combination - gray on bottom, white on top. Here's a little experiment (very, very rough - sorry for the quality, I did it very quickly.)
