Help - we've run into a finishing design problem in the new kitchen in our recently renovated 1912 house. The overall sensibility is modernized Arts & Crafts. The kitchen has light cream travertine floors and buttercream cabinets in shaker style around the perimeter and leathered black granite countertops. The island is medium brown quartersawn oak with a multi-colored on buttercream background granite (greys, blacks, browns, cremes). The appliances are stainless steel, as is the apron front sink in the island. The cooktop and hoodfan are on a wall with the original exposed brick, painted the warm white trim color. The problem is what to do about the remaining backsplash in the space between buttercream cabinets and black granite countertop. We do not want something busy (there is already enough going on in this room) - and I would want a color that is similar to the exposed brick color to tie together with that wall. I don't want subway of any kind because it will compete unfavorably with the exposed brick. The original plan was full sheet calacatta marble - with very minimal yellow and grey veining but we have been unable to get the right product - we just bought a batch and it just doesn't work (all the veining is grey and too busy). So now we are at a loss as to what to do next......
