Small tiles are better in small areas, they give a more spacious feel. Large tiles have the opposite effect. Small tiles are more in style with an older colonial home.

For a small powder room, you might consider indulging in a gorgeous marble mosaic.

Using a smaller tile keeps the size a Mystery, whereas a Big tile tells it all about the Actual area and big tiles don't tend to compliment smaller areas .

Personally I like to use larger tiles with minimal grout lines in a small space since it is visually less cluttered thus making the bathroom feel larger.

Thank you for the photos Dytecture....these give me an entirely different perspective on large tile in small bath. Small grout lines seems to make good sense, too.

You're welcome, not only are larger sized tiles more practical and timeless but I would imagine if I was doing a renovation that I want something different than what I have before rather than replacing with what currently is in the room :)

I've used 12x12 and larger tiles in small baths many times and they look wonderful! But I think it's a personal choice, not a right or wrong.

I think there's a good argument for both. Like the photos dytecture posted, a stony look tile with a tight, matching color grout line that will disappear can really open up the room. For a more period look there are so many great mosaics available. I think the worst thing you can do is use a 6 x 6 or 12 x 12 and run it straight. Then the size of the space becomes really obvious. Whatever you can do to break up the space visually will help, good luck!

Definitely see how staggering large tile as the photos sent by Dytecture were done makes a big difference as you suggest. Small or large? Decisions, decisions!
