Colours that works with the floor

I just bought a house and the kitchen is stumping me. After the house purchase, we don't have much money to work with so current fixes will be mostly limited to paint and simple organizational upgrades. (And the slatted pantry door can't be gone quickly enough.)

I originally planned to do white upper cabinets and charcoal lowers, but when I did a quick mock-up, I discovered that this brought out the green tone in the floor and made it look dirty. I look forward to the day that I can change the floor, but right now I need to work with it. I considered navy lowers, but it doesn't feel quite right. The counters are a beautiful, white quartz.

Keeping in mind that beige is not my thing, what colours would you make the cabinets, walls, and ceiling?

I would not do a thing and spend time saving up money so you can make changes to the layout to update the cabinets and improve appliance location. The good thing about us is we LOVE to spend $ the bad thing about us is we don't save/plan enough! However, if your kitchen table and chairs is an indication of your style, shabby chic modern then consider removing the doors on the wall cabinet left/right of sink, paint inside of cabinet to match outside finish of cabinet (whatever you might select) so they become open shelves to store your glassware and dishes. You can bring fun fabric for window treatment and use same fabric as a curtain for the pantry and remove those doors you hate. IF you can afford an electrician to add a new outlet for fridge, I do agree - move fridge into pantry and buy a pantry cabinet to position where the fridge is - that pantry cabinet can be a different color style - and work with that different color as an accent wall where the table is. Have fun!

Although you prefer cool colors and would like to go grey and white, keep in mind that grey and beige are beautiful together. The walls in the top left photo below are off-white, for example. You could go with grey lowers and off-white uppers, which would tie the floor in and prevent it from standing out against white.

You could also go with a lighter shade of grey or green/grey (top right photo) for both uppers and lowers and paint the walls off-white. At least the color of the walls will be temporary and easier to change later when you can replace the flooring.

Or, you could go with a brown/grey for the cabinets (bottom left), which would work well with the floors because it's a warm shade of grey. You've definitely got options, but since cabinets are harder to paint than walls, I'd paint the cabinets the color you want and do a temporary off-white or beige shade for the walls. The bottom right photo shows grey cabs with beige flooring, off-white walls, white counters and shades of beige/taupe in the back splash to tie it all in.

Grey and beige actually have an elegant quality together, so by looking at it that way, it might help you work with your flooring.

I just realized how unclear I was. That's what I get for posting during a bout with insomnia instead of waiting until morning. The first two photos that I posted are what it currently looks like: light green cabinets, lighter green ceiling and walls, grey/green floor with very dark grout. The only white in the room is the trim and the appliances. The table was theirs and is no longer there.

The second two images are what I'd like to do with the cabinet colour but realize that the floor won't let me.

I agree that the layout is lousy, but that's a project for another time. Right now, I want to get rid of the green and that's it. The accents that I have from my previous kitchen are red and turquoise and I love that combo. I tend toward strong, saturated colour.

The first photo posted by Thos. Brothers above isn't bad. I think that it has enough grey in it not to have a yellow cast. It doesn't excite me, but I don't hate it.

There's just something about beige that has never appealed to me and I'm currently in the process of painting over the beige in the rest of the house.

If I did go with a greyish taupe on the cabinets, then what for the ceiling and walls?

    Any other cabinet colour suggestions?
Oh, how I wish that I could delete and start again. (Thos. Baker, not Brothers.Sorry! I don't know how that happened.)

And while moving the fridge into the pantry space is good in theory, the pantry is only 13 inches deep, so it wouldn't work in practice. In the future, the whole kitchen will be redone. Right now, it's going to get some makeup.

do your base cabinets in dark to medium green, and white uppers. if you go dark, you can use the accents you liked from previous kitchen. then paint the walls a very pale turquoise.
What about ebony paint for the lower cabinets? Dark and light is all the rage and it will work with the floor because it is not quite black, but dark enough to brighten the counters. It will enable you to keep your door handles and hinges without making them stand out. Below is an article on how to do it. http://www.paintpro.net/Articles/PP701/PP701_ebonizing.cfm

Since you like strong, saturated colors (turquoise and red) and your kitchen is older, have you considered playing up a retro look by painting the cabinets turquoise?

Thos may be onto something wonderful for you here. Your kitchen is temporary why not have fun with it. Red Lipstick!!
Try painting the upper cabinets a shade of teal/ or turquoise that you like but that will go with the lower cabinets. See if that gives you the change you could live with until a whole redo. You could use a lighter shade of the teal for the walls that abut the cabinets and add an accent wall where you don't have cabinets a red that you like. Accent with red & teal throw rugs in front of the sink, stove and fridge. Add some red as well here & there on the countertops. Leave the ceiling or paint it off white. Add some red towels on your peninsula rack. Take a door off of your existing cupboards to take in for color matching for the right shade of teal. Good luck & have fun.

Love the red kitchen - very daring and rather thrilling! Whatever color you go for, a colorful rug using the same tones, on a rubber backing, will help you to forget about the floor.

Agree with TheFurnitureCollection -- a nice area rug beneath the kitchen table would detract from the floor. In fact, the floor will work in your favor because it's neutral.

You could choose a bright area rug that pops the turquoise, if you like the idea of painting your cabinets turquoise, like those I posted above. Or you could pick a rug that works with red cabinets, like the photos Lucidos posted or you can blend both colors for double pop!

There's lots of ways area rugs can brighten, hide or connect the other elements in the room!

I agree that bright colors are definitely an option, and actually, I think, they are a better choice than the duller colors that we typically see in a kitchen.Your white counters and appliances are great for the bright color schemes.
If you like the idea of using a rug, you can choose a rug you love, and create the color scheme from the colors in the rug.

Thank you everyone! You gave me a lot to think about. I spent more time than I probably should have playing with Photoshop adjustment layers, creating different ceiling/walls/uppers/lowers combinations. I've decided that I like dark lowers and am going to do a peacock/teal colour. The other elements are still in flux because I'm torn between trying to make less work for myself by leaving some green somewhere and painting everything.

I'm going to bring red in with accessories (that I already have) and art, and I'm going to take the above suggestion and find a fun fabric to use for a window shade and/or chair cushions. While I like the look of a rug, I'm unsold on having to clean it, as my husband makes a rather significant mess while cooking. (Not complaining. I'll take a cooking husband over a rug any day!)

lucidos, those red kitchens are gorgeous! I played around with it but my husband didn't like the idea, since there is a direct line of sight into the kitchen when you enter the front door and he thinks that it will be a bit much. While I love the idea, I don't disagree.

aerobix, the ebony suggestion is what got me to where I ended up. I love how the ebony looks, and I really like it with the green, but I feel like once I'm painting, I should use a fun colour. My heart always leads me back to teal. We have a black-brown Bjursta table from Ikea that will probably end up living in the kitchen, so the dark lowers make it not stand out too much.

As it stands now, these images show my two favourite options. One has me painting everything and the other leaves the green on the ceiling and upper cabinets. I think that I'll start by painting the lower cabinets and go from there.

(Oh! And I looked at the floor again and it seems like the green cast in the photos is actually reflection off the walls and ceiling. Oh, happy day! I attached a close-up of the floor, too.)

    Thank you again!

If u want your flooring to be the same:
Put a printed curtain with dark colors.
The color of walls with dining table must be a shade of brown
to bring out your white dining set
Cabinets must be a darker shade of green
    Change the location of fridge.

Ha!. Seriously though toss a dark Monet yellow sunflower color "somewhere" Or I'll have to break open my program.

spring570, no, colours wasn't the typo, "works" in the plural was. My Canadian spelling was highly intentional :)

If I see some sunflower art that speaks to me, I'll jump at the opportunity :D

Wondered also if you were referring to the plural. Words ending in "or" are usually "our" in the northern neighbour. Always tries to auto-correct. Love Houzz. Everyone seems so willing to help others. Did an addition to our cottage and Houzz was my go-to for ideas.

I set my phone to UK English so that it wouldn't constantly try to deny my Canadian identity. It really aggravates me when I have to fight against all the American versions.

Looking on my phone, I also see that the colours in my photos look much darker than they were on my laptop, where I made them. The shade of teal that I'm taking about for the lower cabinets is on the rather vibrant side of things. :)

Personally, I'd go with an eggplant lower. Yes, eggplant. A harmonious green checkered splash, and a victorian white upper slightly tinted with that same eggplant. I'd accent with yellow-green cannisters etc.
lucidos, I've long loved that colourful pattern and I think that it would be a fantastic fabric for kitchen chairs, but I have never been able to find what fabric it is. Actually, I don't even know if it's a fabric at all! But I do love the sunniness of the yellow with the red, teal, green, etc. It's actually ideal.

Plank & Vine, eggplant, eh? The idea intrigued me so I tried it out in my mock-up. It didn't feel right for me, for this room, but I love the idea and would love to see someone else do an eggplant kitchen. It's actually the main colour of my master bedroom. (Eggplant and green feature prominently in my sister's apartment, which has a lot of Disney's-Maleficent-inspired décor. Without being cheesy and themey.) I love eggplant with orange, pink/fuschia, and teal/turquoise accents. I appreciate the suggestion :)

Ah boring beige. Well the best way to deal with it for the cabinets, upper and lower, since you like saturated colours is work with beige's complement...at its base, beige has yellow..the complement to yellow is...purple! Now I'm not talking easter here...but go with a distinctly purple grey in a mid to dark tone ( or even eggplant) and your floor will be singing along, in tune. Teal, red and even gold will work with it. Stay away from paint for your cabinets which has too much clarity, you need it to be a trifle muddied so the beige is happy
