Faux finishes will come and go. It's a matter of personal taste, and also quite geography-dependent. Dallas and Miami may never tire of rustic Tuscan. I'd recommend using a light touch to make it easier to live with over the years.

Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated! How do either of you feel about painted embossed wallpaper in small areas? I have a coffered tiled ceiling in my office that I thought about papering inside the tiles?

The embossing inside coffering sounds like a great idea!

If not done properly it can look very tacky and possibly outdated, but I have seen a very light cream colored venetian plaster that looked amazing in a modern home actually, as well as it nicely done in a modern/rustic style home.

If you do it at all, I would use venittian plaster or the plaster paint (Portola paints) that dries like a plaster look. I would opt for wall coverings, there are plenty out there with great textures that look like a plaster effect, and will probably cost less. If you get tired of it, you have the wall coverings removed.
