Janet, the rugs I Photoshopped in your space are from West Elm. I personally have two rugs from them and like them very much.

Also, deco has made a few points about arrangement which may be valid, I think. My first thoughts when I saw the desk were that it was facing the wrong way and too crammed in to turn. If it's only to be used occasionally, it might be all right, though I prefer desks to face into the room.

More photos of the whole space might suggest a better arrangement. But decor- and color-wise, you're doing great.

The desk gets used quite a bit, along with the file cabinet next to it. Perhaps a new desk and file cabinet that I can put in the closet? The hutch has been in my family forever and is a sentimental piece (massive as it is). The top drawer actually folds out revealing cubbies, drawers and a felt covered desk top. The only other wall it could go on would be where the loveseat is placed.

Didn't realize there was a closet. I worked for years with my"closet" computer. Then I could close the doors on it and forget it. I would like to see the hutch as the focal piece in this room, sitting (as you said) where the sofa is now. The bookcase could take the hutch spot and the computer, et al, could tuck away in the closet. This way your space could be a sitting room most of the time. Place the sofa and coffee table in front of the single window while the chair could sit in the current location of the bookcase. The art will need to be rearranged some, but I think that will make for a great space once you find an area rug. Personally, I'd opt for one with a bit of color to warm the space a bit. A sofa pillow or two would bring the color up off the floor, and you could pick it up again in some stationary drapes, and texture via some fiber shades or blinds.

There is a sliding door closet and a standard type closet. I don't think I could put the chair where the bookcase is now as it would block the entrance to the room. I agree the hutch may be too large for the wall where it is currently positioned.

You could leave the bookcase there and put the chair in the hutch location. I wasn't thinking of having the chair flat up against the wall but set at a 45 degree angle from the frame on the sliding door. With the computer in the closet, you are more than likely to turn right when you enter the room. Right now, you probably walk straight in and to the computer but that would change.

Thanks to deco for suggestions on rearranging furniture. Now what size rug?

Do you want the rug to "fill" the room (leaving about 18-24" of floor exposed all around) or just anchor the seating (extending about 12-18" on either side of the loveseat?) If you plan to take the computer to the closet that will change the footprint of the space. Use painter's tape and tape out the "rug" on the floor to see what feels better to you. Do love the hutch there. If you want the desk left and the bookcase right of the window, you could pull the seating closer together for better conversation, or you could put the chair on that side and the sofa on the other - both of them more perpendicular and a bit in front of the hutch.
