What are the colours on your walls? You could go for a much lighter version of one of those colours or for a carpet that has a pattern with the colours of your walls in it.
Or a neutral coloured rug. Or a cow hide? Or a large oriental rug?

Why are your chairs with their backs to the fireplace? Is there a specific reason you don't have them on this side of the sofa, facing the fireplace?

The colors are a deep red and beige. There are no reasons why the chairs are placed that way but I have attached two photos that give you a better look of the family area. The arrangement is open to change :). I am also looking for a new media unit. And am thinking of putting some shelving or something where the TV area is. Thanks!

This is a seriously gorgeous room. Please move your chairs to the other side so they face the fireplace, and put the single chair in front of the plant angled to face the sofa.

You need a media cabinet that is longer than your TV. That could be tricky; long ones are hard to find. For the time being, I lengthened the one you have. I think the TV wall is better without shelves.

I had serious reservations about covering that incredible floor with a rug. I would probably get one just large enough to put the front legs of the sofa on it and that leaves much of the floor exposed. Color will depend on what else you decide to do in the room.

I would clear the mantel and get a large serious piece of art. Let that inform the rest of the colors in the space.

I actually want to just get rid of the single chair that is not the white leather one. It's very old. I can put one chair there and then one chair by the tree. I could put the tree somewhere else.

Aha! I thought the loveseat was a single chair. In any case, those two chairs have to come out from in front of the fireplace. Do you need this much seating? If you don't, I'd get rid of the loveseat, put the matching chairs in its place, and the single chair in the opposite corner in front of the tree.

You also need to pull the seating--the two chairs or the loveseat if you keep it--up to the corner of the couch so traffic from the kitchen goes behind it, not in front of it.

And, the picture on the staircase wall is seriously mis-hung. It's way too high and needs to be centered on that wall.

No i don't really need that love seat, i can put the two chairs there and buy a new chair for where the tree is and get a nice piece of artwork. If I do get a rug, it will definitely be something small like you suggested. Thanks so much for taking the time to give me advice. Happy Holidays!

My bad. I guess the art on the stair wall is centered; an odd shadow on that wall made it look like a niche. Anyway, this is about how high it should be (unless you put a table under it), and here is where the seating should go:

Don't get the rug TOO small. Just make sure you don't cover too much of that floor because it's more beautiful than just about any rug you'll find! Good luck.

I told my husband he has to fix it! I am planning on putting a small sofa table there and then I can put all those pictures on it. I am searching for some nice artwork and then will figure out that rug. Thanks for the idea!

Grey with black accents. Something with texture. Pure while would make your leather chairs look off white. If it's not a perfect match, it looks offsetting. Black would blend too much into the dark floors.

With such solid colors throughout, a textured rug would work great. Stay neutral.
