Most interior designers would be able to provide a free first consultation for fees and design direction.

Be aware that if you are asking a designer to work with you on an hourly consulting basis, most likely that first visit will not be free. The only time I don't charge a fee is when I am meeting with a client to understand the scope of a large project so that I can provide a proposal.

I'm feeling you're just starting out. Are you sure you need a designer? Maybe work a room at a time and figure out what you want to keep and what you'd need to replace.

We just bought a house. We have been renting forever and I am no decorator by any means. I am a dumster diver, get free things and just utilize stuff whenever they fall in my lap. I rarely buy furniture new because I am terrified of spending money especially since the kids are still young and destroys things. I hate having buyers remorse too. My husband is more of a diyer than me but his time is extremely limited. I am paranoid of spending money but would like a house that we can all live comfortably. I have a total of 8 kids and one grandchild on the way. Only five kids live with us right now. Originally I was going to just move all the stuff we have in the rental to the new place but looked around and said our furniture looks yucky. Nothing matches, mix and match--kind of like a 1970's look. UGLY So just trying to gain some skills.

Happy, i certainly understand the budget constraints you are experiencing! I suggest that while packing to move that you only bring items that you love, truly need or cannot afford to replace at this time. I think the most important things are that your space is clean and that everyone has a bed to sleep in! Elbow grease, paint, thrift stores and Craigslist are your friends. Enjoy the hunt. Only purchase what you love or have a specific place/need for. In time it will all come together.
